The National Assoc. of Latino Independent Producers announced the launch of the Latino Lens: Narrative Short Film Incubator for Women of Color. Sponsored by Netflix, the program provides support for four Latinx or women of color writers and/or directors to aid in the creation of an original short film.

“With both NALIP and Netflix being supporters of inclusive representation in the industry, we are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate and amplify intersectional narratives,” NALIP project director Liliana Espinoza said.

Provided resources include a production grants and production training, from NALIP, across pre to post-production development stages. Once the films are completed, NALIP will bolster the filmmakers with industry mentorship opportunities and programming opportunities at the organization’s key events throughout the year, including NALIP media Summit and the Diverse Women in Media Forum.

With recent studies by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and the DGA TV Inclusion report revealing the lack of representation for Latinx and women of color directors, the program puts forth an opportunity to make industry entry more accessible.

“NALIP has long advocated for Latinx creators, and we’re excited to support their latest effort to identify and uplift stories told by Latinx women and women of color,” Netflix director of drama development Pete Corona said.

Applications for the Latino Lens: Narrative Short Film Incubator close on May 23 at midnight. Among other materials, applications for first round consideration require an original short narrative concept, a reel, a production timeline, a pitch deck, a letter of support from a key mentor and the topsheet of a budget outline.

All four finalist films will be showcased during a screening at the NALIP Latino Media Fest in October 2021 during Latinx Heritage Month. The final delivery of the completed short film is due September 10.
