Unclaimed money goes a long way

Any cash that isn’t claimed after a total of 180 days from a game played in the UK goes to National Lottery projects across the country.

Folks in Ireland have just half that time to claim too, with only 90 days before the prize money is off the table.

Once the claim period is over, the ticket officially expires and the owner of the lottery ticket will no longer be able to claim any of their winnings.

But after that time has expired, any unclaimed prizes, plus any interest they might have accumulated in that time, are allocated to the National Lottery’s Good Causes fund instead.

This will usually then go on to help fund things like sport programmes or local community buildings or other projects.

A LUXURY holiday, an expensive shopping spree, a flashy new motor – the possibilities are endless when you’re a new millionaire.

However, not everyone has such frivolous plans when it comes to spending their lottery money.

Here we reveal some of the most unusual ways people have celebrated their newfound wealth.

Is there a magic winning formula for winning?

Have you ever wondered the secrets to winning big in the lottery? Is it pure luck or is there a system to it…?

    1. Avoid computer picks. It lowers your odds of winning.
    2. On scratchcards, try buying 10 of one ticket instead of several different tickets.
    3. Mix up your numbers.
    4. Even it out – Don’t pick all odd or all even numbers.
    5. Split from the crowd, so don’t play patterns.
    6. Apparently, you should avoid anniversaries, birthday’s and dates.
    7. Avoid playing winning numbers that have been drawn before, because every combination has a chance of coming up once every half a million drawings.

    Lottery fairytales gone wrong

Not all lottery winners have such modest tastes including Lotto lout Michael Carroll who bagged £9.7million in 2002.

The former binman, who was branded the ‘King of Chavs’, blew his hefty fortune on “drugs, sex and gold”.

Callie Rogers, who at 16 became Britain’s youngest lottery winner in 2003, spent thousands of her £1.9m jackpot on wild parties, three boob jobs, designer clothes and drugs.

And Lee Ryan, who scooped £6.5m in 1995, ended up penniless and spent two years living on the street after blowing his cash on luxury cars, a helicopter and a £2m home.

How to collect your lottery winnings

Usually, if you played online, the money will be paid directly into your National Lottery account.

For the most part you can also claim your prize from a designated post office, regional National Lottery centre, or by post. You may have to complete a claim form and provide ID.

For winnings of £50,000 and over, you should call the National Lottery to arrange for your claim to be processed in person.

What prizes can be claimed at the Post Office?

Prizes up to £500 can be claimed at the Lottery terminal in store.

For prizes over £500 and up to £50,000, you must take your winning ticket to the Lottery terminal for scanning and then go to the PO counter.

AND, if you’ve been really, really lucky and won over £50,000, you will need to claim your prize in person.

    Dad’s pocket money

A hospital visit to see her father led lucky Libby Elliot, from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, to win £2,169,664 on the lottery.

Shortly before leaving, he gave his grandchildren pocket money and “two pounds pocket money” to his daughter too.

In 2013, Libby, then 57, told the Daily Record: “On a whim, I put it on the Lucky Dip on my way home.”

The next day, her dad couldn’t believe the news and was amazed that Libby was in hospital with him rather than planning ways to spend her cash.

She recalled him saying: “Look at you, you’re a multi-millionaire and yet you’re sitting here beside me.”

Libby said that memory “still makes me cry” and since then her life has changed drastically.

She went on to lose 11 stone and went “travelling the world on dream trips – from Jerusalem to Route 66 to Buenos Aires”.

Gran, 70, ‘physically sick’ after scooping £3.8M jackpot

Diane Bate, 70, was in “total disbelief” after winning the multi-million pound prize in the Lotto draw on December 12.

Diane said: “I checked my ticket early on Sunday morning using the National Lottery app when it made a funny sound.

“I looked at the amount and couldn’t quite believe my eyes, I thought, ‘surely that can’t be right?!’ The most I have ever won before is £100.

“I was in total disbelief so I woke Michael up to check the ticket – he wasn’t happy but we’ve been married 52 years so he soon got over it!

“I still didn’t believe it, so I also checked it with my granddaughter too.

“I must have checked it about six times in total before I started to believe it was real, and at that point, I was physically sick!”

NHS worker syndicate bagged £118,044 on EuroMillions

A SYNDICATE of 53 NHS workers won £118,044 on EuroMillions earlier this month.

They matched five numbers and one lucky star in the October 8 draw.

The syndicate members are mostly pharmacy staff at Morriston Hospital in Swansea and aged between 20 and 63.

They have been working flat out during the pandemic.

Pharmacy technician Kim Owen, 61, said: “It’s been a scary time for all of us so the win is extra special.”

Members of the syndicate, which is called the Pharmily Crew, will each receive £2,227. Most say they will spend their share on sunshine holidays.

How long do winners have to claim their money?

Winners from different countries have different deadlines to claim their prize.

In Austria, winners have a whole three years to claim the prize before it is returned to the lottery and used to fund boosted prizes.

Belgian winners, on the other hand, only have around 140 days before the money is returned to the Belgian National Lottery.

The least amount of time to snap up the jackpot goes to France and Luxembourg.

Winners from Ireland, Portugal and Spain all have around 90 days to tell the world they’ve won.

Scratchcard prizes must be claimed within 180 days after being purchased.

How to collect your lottery winnings

Usually, if you played online, the money will be paid directly into your National Lottery account.

‘Being rich doesn’t make you a better person’

A National Lottery winning dinner lady still lives in her council house, shops in Primark and drives a Kia despite bagging £1.8million.

Trish Emson, 51, explained money or her millionaire status did not change her or her partner Graham Norton, also 51, who still works as a decorator.

The down-to-earth pair have even managed to keep their teenage son Benjamin, 17, in check – and don’t even give him pocket money.

The modest mum, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, said: “Being rich doesn’t make you posh or a better person.

“I don’t like showing off and bragging about money and I can’t be posh anyway.

“To look at me you wouldn’t think I was a millionaire, but if I have to dress up I feel fake, I prefer my jeans,” she told The Mirror.
