Eight members of the Welsh Guards accompanied Diana’s coffin carried on a gun carriage and draped in the Royal Standard. The young Princes William and Harry, Prince Philip, Earl Spencer and Prince Charles walked behind the casket on its one hour, 47-minute journey from Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey. 

70 years ago (1952) Thirty-one people died, including the pilot, when a prototype De Havilland 110 jet disintegrated in mid-air seconds after breaking the sound barrier at Farnborough Air Show, Hants, raining down debris on the onlookers.

The tragedy led to tougher safety measures to protect spectators at air shows.

46 years ago (1976) Soviet Air Defence Forces pilot Viktor Belenko landed his MiG-25 jet fighter at Hakodate, Japan, and requested political asylum in the US.

Belenko would go on to become a leading US aerospace engineer, with his official American citizenship being signed into law by then President Jimmy Carter on October 14, 1980.
