The Most Expensive Dresses Ever At The MET Gala, Ranked

The MET Gala is arguably one of the biggest annual events in Hollywood. Attendees drop approximately $250,000 on a ticket, so it shouldn’t be surprising that many of the outfits are worth small fortunes on their own. Below, we take a look at some of the most expensive outfits ever worn to the MET Gala – it’s shocking how much money can go into one outfit for a single night.

Beyonce’s Diamond-Encrusted Latex Dress

Beyonce made a bold statement at the 2016 MET Gala when she showed up in a custom-made Givenchy dress, which was completed encrusted in real pearls and made from 100% Talalay latex.

The price of her gown hasn’t been confirmed, but each pearl is apparently worth $8,000, meaning the price was likely over a million.

Kim Kardashian’s 2023 Gown Featured 50,000 Pearls

Kim Kardashian had a pearl moment at the 2023 MET Gala when showed up literally dripping in pearls – 50,000 to be exact. The reality star admits some were falling off during the event, so she made she her team (as well as her daughter) were picking them up, considering how expensive each real pearl was.

The price of the custom Schiaparelli design is unconfirmed, but like Beyonce’s dress, it’s likely a million-dollar creation because of how many pearls were used. Plus, it apparently took over 1,000 hours to put together.

Rihanna’s Rare Gui Pei Omelette Dress

To this day, one of the most stunning looks Rihanna has ever worn was the yellow Rihanna’s Guo Pei omelette dress, which she attended the 2015 MET Gala in.

The exact price of the gown is unknown, but Gui Pei’s custom designs often start at $1 million, so the dress easily cost six figures, especially considering how much time and material went into its reaction. The cape alone took 50,000 hours of hand embroidery. It also weighed over 50 pounds.

“In the beginning when Rihanna reached out, I didn’t know who she was because I was not really paying attention to the entertainment world, I wasn’t really a red carpet designer,” Gui Pei said of designing the piece.

“I was actually nervous as I didn’t know if Rihanna would be able to carry it off, it’s such a heavy dress and such a unique piece,” he continued.

“I really appreciate Rihanna for giving this dress a second chance, a chance to come to life again,” the designer added.

Kim Kardashian’s $5 Million Marilyn Monroe Gown

The most expensive – and perhaps most controversial – dress ever worn to the MET Gala was the striking gown Kim Kardashian wore in 2022, which previously belonged to Marilyn Monroe. She famously wore it in 1962 when singing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy.

In fact, the dress is considered to be the most expensive gown in the world. It was sold to Ripley’s Believe It Or Not in 2016 for $5 million. Most of the time, it’s on display at the company’s museum in Orlando.

While Kim figured the dress would be a headline-making way to honor the MET Gala’s “Gilded Glamour” theme, she received a lot of backlash for the choice.

Not only did people say it was inappropriate to wear a piece of history for such a vain event, but it was later alleged that Kim damaged the dress during her brief time wearing it.

“To anyone who may be questioning the actual condition of Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Happy Birthday Mr. President’ dress prior to being purchased by @ripleysbelieveitornot or implying that low-quality photos of the dress were shared to somehow make the newly discovered damage to the dress seem worse than it actually is, this is 4K video that I took of the gown while it was on display at @juliens_auctions in November of 2016,” historian Scott Fortner wrote on social media after Kim returned the dress.

Fortner oversees the Marilyn Monroe Collection, which is a variety of the late actress’ personal effects, including clothing. “Without question, the damage is significant,” he added.

Kim later defended herself, saying she never damaged the dress. Rather, the reality star admitted to losing a significant amount of weight in a short time to fit into the gown, which also raised concern from the public.

Emma Chamberlain’s $30 Million Patiala Necklace

Emma Chamberlain had a relatively simple look for the 2022 MET Gala, which included a custom Louis Vuitton dress paired with a diamond tiara, matching earrings, and a show-stopping diamond choker. While her outfit easily cost thousands, it was her necklace that was the priciest part.

Known as the Patiala Necklace, the choker was made from a 234-carat yellow diamond that once belonged to the Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh. Cartier was commission to transform the stone into a necklace in the ‘80s. Now, it features five rows of platinum chains and hundreds of individual diamonds and rubies.

Though the necklace’s official value is unknown, reports suggest it would cost $30 million to replicate the choker by today’s standards.
