This advent calendar costs £20,000 and contains 18ct gold jewellery

The countdown to Christmas is almost upon us, which means one thing: advent calendar season.

Starting at around £1.50 for a Cadbury’s Dairy Milk and going up to around £6 for a more extravagant Lindt option, traditionally advent calendars don’t tend to break the bank – unless you opt for a non-chocolatey, ‘grown up’ one which, admittedly, can be pricier.

But while luxury calendars have risen in popularity, and cost, over the years, they’ve got nothing on this one.

C W Sellors – an independent, family run British jeweller – is selling an advent calendar containing high-end jewellery and various other expensive items for a casual £20,000.

A description on the company’s website reads: ‘The contents of this luxurious advent calendar are worth £24,070 but it’s available to purchase for £20,000, saving you £4,070.’

What a saving.

Styled on Chatsworth House, in Derbyshire (the home of the Duke of Devonshire), the ‘Chatsworth Winnats Luxury Jewellery and Gift Advent Calendar’ contains pieces including 18ct gold earrings, 18ct gold pearl sets, a variety of necklaces bracelets, a Faberge candle, and a limited edition bottle of Lapidarist dry gin.

The various items were hand selected by Rebecca Sellors, who grew up in the family business, which has shops in Chesterfield and Bakewell and was founded in 1979. Allof the included jewellery is handcrafted in the UK.

So, is this the most expensive calendar of all time?

Not even close. Just last year a luxury Swiss watch retailer released an advent calendar worth $1.5 million (around £1.2 million).

Behind its doors, it included a carefully curated collection of expensive watches, from brands including Piguet and Patek Philippe.

In 2010, Belgian company Octagon Blue GCV, created a bespoke jewellery calendar with a price tag of £1.7 million – including the design of an exclusive piece. However, that price wasn’t including VAT.

According to the company director, 50 expert staff worked 20 hour days in order to get it ready for the Christmas countdown.

All that considered, the £20,000 price tag from CW Sellors seems like a bargain…
