Tottenham vs Manchester United betting preview

Chelsea v Liverpool proved to be a highly-entertaining game between two heavyweights on the opening weekend and this contest could provide something similar.

New-look Tottenham offered much more in terms of attack in Ange Postecoglou’s first game than they did for most of last season under different management.

His approach should lead more excitement in the opponent’s penalty area but, given the chances Brentford were afforded, it may be a struggle to improve a defensive record which was pretty grim last season.

Unlike Spurs, United got off to a winning start but they can consider themselves slightly fortunate to have beaten Wolves 1-0 – again, defensive frailties were on show as the visitors missed some good chances and were denied what looked like a clear penalty.

Tottenham’s both-teams-to-score stats were high last season (see below) and the Postecoglou approach suggests that’s unlikely to change.

In short, expect a few goals in this game and bet accordingly.

📝 Tottenham vs Manchester United key stats

  • Only relegated Leeds landed the ‘both teams to score’ bet more often than Spurs last season. Tottenham did so in 63% of their games.
  • Tottenham conceded 63 goals in last season’s Premier League – the most of the top 14 – and they let in two more in their first game of this campaign last weekend.
  • Casemiro was Man Utd’s top tackler in terms of quantity in 2022/23 but Bruno Fernandes also posted good numbers. He made more tackles than Rodri and kicked off this season with six against Wolves.
  • Cristian Romero is set to miss out for Spurs due to a concussion sustained against Brentford last weekend. Davinson Sanchez should start in his place, although he is interesting other clubs at the time of writing.
  • Lisandro Martinez limped out of United’s game with Wolves but may be fit. Victor Lindelof stands by. Christian Eriksen could return to the starting XI but new boy Rasmus Hojlund isn’t ready yet.

Tottenham vs Manchester United best bets

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals

As anticipated, Spurs played in a much more attacking way in Ange Postecoglou’s first game in charge and while that resulted in two goals at the right end, they are offered up plenty of chances at the other.

And don’t be put off by the scoreline in United’s opening game against Wolves (1-0). The expected goals ‘result’ was 1.97-1.72 which shows they were far from watertight against a side expected to struggle.

Spurs games should feature plenty of goals this season and it’s worth backing them in this one.

Bet on both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 8/11 at Spreadex

James Maddison over 2.5 shots

Maddison loves to try his luck from a distance and is likely going to be on set-piece duty for Spurs around the box this season.

This is his home debut so he’ll be keen to impress so expect him to have a go from range once or twice.

The England star landed this in five of his last seven starts for Leicester and will be encouraged by United’s shaky start on Monday.

🥅 Back Maddison 3+ shots at 5/4 at bet365 🥅

Bruno Fernandes over 2 tackles

The layers seem to be underrating the Portuguese in the tackles market.

He made six against Wolves on Monday and was in the top 30 in the league for tackles last season.

11/5 about him making three of more in a game which could be pretty frantic looks good value.

💥 Bet on Fernandes over 2 tackles at 11/5 at William Hill 💥
