‘We tried English tapas at cockney café before Lionesses bring home the bacon’

As our Lionesses take on Spain in the biggest women's football match on the planet, we've hit the opposition where it hurts – their food.

Sure, the Spanish may have the weather and the warm Mediterranean Sea kissing their long stretches of sandy beaches but ahead of the World Cup final, there's one thing we refuse to admit defeat on.

Anyone who mistakenly considered the height of English cuisine to be fish and chips or pie and mash needs to take note.

Not only do we do tapas of our own, we can do it better and our trip to a south east London greasy spoon proves it.

Our Daily Star reporters made their way to self-proclaimed "best café in town" Poplar Café to get a traditional slap up English tapas to show the Spanish how it's done… not like we're already going to do that on Sunday.

After we ordered our classic tapas bites – including baked beans and a corned beef sandwich – we sat tight with a cuppa.

Who needs a juicy jug of sangria anyway!

Fuelled by a mug of English breakfast tea and an eagerness to savour our delicacies in the name of patriotism, we awaited the staff to bring over our real tapas spread on small plates, of course.

A corned beef sandwich made its way to our table first – but it wasn't a good start to proving that English tapas is superior.

Grit doesn't belong between two slices of white, it belongs on the pitch.

And what we have in our sandwiches, we have in our Lionesses' squad.

After we washed down the questionable 'wich with a proper brew, it was time to really get into the game – that being devouring our impressive array of English grub (minus the corned beef).

A big bowl of baked beans and a plate full of mushrooms will do it.

Chorizo in a red wine glaze and sautéed peppers begone!

The Spaniards might have patatas bravas on their side, but that's no match for our bit of everything dish, bubble and squeak.

That's on the resourcefulness of the English!

And what we've got in our grub, we've got in the game.

It's safe to say the English don't do tapas like anyone else.

Can anyone really compete with the picky-style dinner when they've got to contend with the sausage roll and pork pie?

We think not.

Ok yes, the Spanish might have their calamari and fancy hams.

But in this English tapas sitting, we have two rashers of bacon and a lone sausage which pummels the olive-paired competition to a pulp any day.

So, does our picky English dinner beat the small plated Spanish spread?

You bet.

While the corned beef sarnie might be on the losing side this time, our beige and meaty delights certainly knock chorizo and aioli covered spuds off their pedestal.

And if our English grub has the power to dominate the tapas scene, then we're sure that England thrashing Spain on Sunday will be no head feat.

Let's bring home the bacon!
