The UK has started its cautious roadmap out of Covid restrictions, as the number of new daily coronavirus cases continues to fall. You’ll now be able to meet up with friends or family in someone’s back garden, but how long will you have to wait before being able to stay over at their house overnight?

Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed his highly-anticipated roadmap out of Covid restrictions on February 22.

It included three main ‘steps’, which culminated in all restrictions being lifted, allowing members of the public to hug their friends or family for the first time in more than an entire calendar year.

The roadmap is now well underway, with the UK reaching part 2 of step 1 this week.

It means that there’s a return for the Rule of 6, allowing people to meet outdoors.

When can I stay overnight with friends?

While we’ve reached another milestone in the UK’s roadmap out of restrictions, we’re still a few months away from being able to stay over at a friend’s house.

Overnight stays fall under Step 3 of the roadmap, which starts no earlier than May 17.

If there are any delays to the roadmap, Step 3 won’t be able to start until at least five weeks after Step 2.

By Step 3, the government will be easing restrictions on social contact, re-introducing a ‘common sense’ element.

“At Step 3, the Government will further ease limits on social contact, enabling the public to make informed personal decisions,” the roadmap said.

“It will remain important for people to consider the risks for themselves, taking into account whether they and those they meet have been vaccinated or are at greater risk.

“The Government will continually review the evidence of vaccine efficacy, including its impact on transmission.

“As soon as possible, and no later than Step 3, the Government will update its advice on social distancing between friends and family, including hugging.”

Relaxing social contact rules are also expected to have a major boost on general wellbeing, the roadmap added.

Step 3 also includes the re-opening of indoor entertainment venues, as well as all remaining outdoor entertainment.

A maximum of 10,000 people will be allowed at outdoor seated events.

Significant life events, including weddings and funerals, will be allowed to have a maximum of 30 attendees.

Fewer than 3,000 people tested positive for coronavirus in the UK on Saturday (March 27); the most recent daily figures.

During the January peak, there were almost 60,000 new daily infections.

More than 30 million people have received their first Covid vaccine dose.

Since the start of December, 3.7million people have received both doses of the jab.
