Woman blasts Tesco for charging £30 for a 5lb leg of lamb and vows to demand a refund – but critics insist the price IS fair
- Rozalia Linder, who lives in Ramsbottom, has sparked outrage on Facebook
- Posted that she wants a refund on a leg of lamb bought for £30.86 from Tesco
- Flood of comments argued the price is fair considering the cost of farming
A woman who was left fuming after her husband splurged on a leg of lamb has divided opinion after posing on social media that she will be returning the meat to the supermarket because of the expense.
Posting on the What’s on in Ramsbottom Facebook page, Rozalia Linder explained that she sent her husband Clive to buy a leg of lamb from Tesco and was stunned after he returned home having spent £30.86.
She revealed plans to take the meat, weighing just over 5lbs, back to the store and demand a refund, while arguing that many families can’t even afford the sum a week to feed their children.
The post quickly gathered hundreds of comments, however unexpectedly for Rozalia the majority were defending the price and justifying that farming is expensive.
A woman has been blasted after her post about planning to return a leg of lamb (pictured) because of the price went viral on Facebook
Rozalia Linder admitted that she was ‘absolutely mortified’ after her husband Clive returned home with a leg of lamb bought for £30.86
Rozalia said her husband Clive questioned the price in store, but went ahead with purchasing the leg of lamb.
She shared a photograph of the meat alongside her furious post as she called for an intervention to reduce the future cost.
Rozalia wrote: ‘I sent Clive to Tesco for a leg of lamb…
‘£30.86p!!!… Absolutely Mortified at the price!! He did question the price and accepted the answer and paid….. however, I’m not prepared to pay this!!
‘Some families don’t even have £30 a week to feed their children
‘Something needs to be done. I will be taking this item back to Tesco tomorrow and asking for my money back!!!!!!’
A flood of comments blasted Rozalia for accusing Tesco of overcharging for the price of lamb.
One person wrote: ‘I’d encourage you to farm your own sheep and you will discover that the price you paid, is actually more than fair. £30 for a leg of lamb four years ago, would be too much, but now, with the current inflation, don’t be surprised if the same leg of lamb is priced at £40 by the end of the year’
A flood of comments on the post argued the price of the meat is representative of how expensive it is to own a farm
Another said: ‘Cheap that is, perhaps spend a few months working at a farm and you’ll understand how much goes into food production. This isn’t a dig, but honestly until you realise the cost of keeping animals, especially when it’s your livelihood and business, then I can understand why you would think that is expensive’
‘Is this a joke post? Surely the issue here is with yourself? The husband bought it, paid for it and was happy with that price but came home and you’ve kicked off about it. It’s certainly not Tesco’s fault as I’m guessing he wasn’t held hostage until he agreed to pay the price shown?’ a third commented.
A fourth added: ‘British lamb is one of the most expensive meats you can buy. People on low incomes absolutely wouldn’t be buying British lamb, so you can’t use that as an example of its cost.
‘Farming in the UK is an expensive business, especially when it comes to lamb, it’s nice to see them supporting British farming. If you want cheap lamb go to Farm Foods, it will be frozen c*** but it will be cheaper. Hope no Clives were harmed during this incident.’
Others argued Rozalia can use the lamb to make more than just one meal and that it would be wasteful to return it because Tesco can’t resell to another customer.
Advocating for buying in bulk, one wrote: ‘Hmm with some vegetables that leg of lamb could stretch a couple of days and feed a family for a while. Compare a £30 leg of lamb with the quantity of veg you get and nutritional value to a one meal family takeaway.
Others justified the price of the lamb, explaining that it can be used to make multiple meals and last a few days
‘If you want it cheaper try bulk buying at wholesale butchers. And… blimey I can’t believe it’s from Tesco having a British label’
Another said: ‘If Tesco refunds you and chucks away this meat (which they’ll have to do, it can’t be resold because even if you tell them it’s been in the fridge they can’t guarantee this) It’s a bloody travesty. Not for you, obviously, but what a bloody waste.
‘Use of foodbanks is at an all time high. I get you’re p***** off with Clive but honestly this is a live and learn situation. Cook it, freeze it, make loads of meals, enjoy them when you eat and laugh about it. But honestly don’t waste the bloody meat by pursuing a refund.’
