American Ultimate Disc League to announce expansion with Colorado Summit

The Colorado Summit of the American Ultimate Disc League will debut in 2022 and play home games at the University of Denver’s Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, according to the league.

The AUDL will have a news conference on Wednesday announcing the addition of Colorado’s newest team in the expanding league, according to a news release.

The 22-team league, which includes teams in Canada and the United States, is about to grow to 25 teams, including the Colorado Summit.

“Colorado has traditionally been home to many of the top club, youth and college ultimate (Frisbee) teams in the country,” the AUDL release said. “These amateur athletes will all have a shot to play on Colorado’s pro ultimate team. The Colorado Summit will be holding open tryouts in January.”

Team owners, local officials, professional athletes and youth ultimate players will gather at 2 p.m. Wednesday outside their upcoming DU campus home field, at 2240 Buchtel Blvd. S., to announce the latest development, the release said.

Ultimate Frisbee is now played by more than 8 million people in more than 100 countries, according to the AUDL. The sport is being considered for admittance to the 2028 Olympics.

The AUDL, an ultimate Frisbee league, played its inaugural season in 2012 with eight teams. Regular season games are played April through July. The Raleigh Flyers won the league title in 2021.

Upcoming AUDL games will be streamed live on AUDL.TV, according to the release, and a console-based ultimate video game will be released in 2022.
