Andy Murray has announced he is back in the ‘good books’ with wife Kim after getting his stolen wedding ring back.

The three-time Grand Slam winner, 34, is in California for the Indian Wells tournament, where he was granted a wildcard to compete.

But disaster struck on his latest US trip when his ring – attached to his ‘smelly’ tennis shoes – were  stolen following his own ‘terrible idea’ to leave them under his car overnight, leaving him in the doghouse back in the UK.

It was labelled as an ‘idiotic’ decision by Murray to dry his sweaty shoes, leading to them being stolen, but following a massive effort from his fans across social media, Murray has now had his belongings returned.

Posting a photo to his 1.7million Instagram followers, Murray showed himself holding his wedding ring and sniffing his shoes.

He included five hashtags to mark the positive update: #ring, #shoes, #stench, #goodbooks and #idiot.

Andy Murray delighted fans by revealing he has been reunited with his lost wedding ring

Murray, pictured with wife Kim Sears, had appealed for the safe return of his ring – and shoes

‘Would you believe it, ring and the shows have come back home!’ he wrote.

‘They still smell horrific but I’m back in the good books.’

In an accompanying video, Murray said: ‘Hi everyone, hope you’re all doing well. I just wanted to send a quick message to say a quick thanks for all the messages and also to everyone for sharing the story about the shoes and the wedding ring.

‘I had to make a few calls today and chat to the security at the hotel and everything and a little update for everyone… would you believe it?’

Murray precedes to take a big sniff inside one of his shoes before he adds: ‘They still absolutely stink but the shoes are back, the wedding ring is back and I’m back in the good books, let’s go!’

Well-wishers to the good news included WTA Tour star Sloane Stephens who commented: ‘Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank goodness!!!!!!!’

British player Naomi Broady led the calls for more, writing: ‘NO WAY!!! We need an explanation!!’

Murray was in the doghouse this week after his ‘terrible idea’ to leave his wedding ring attached to his tennis shoes, which he then left under his car and they were stolen

Murray cannot wear his wedding ring on court so always ties it to his shoelaces for safe-keeping but on this occasion it appeared he forgot it was there. The former world No 1 then was forced to appeal on social media for the safe return of his ring.

Recounting his tale of woe in an Instagram video, Murray said: ‘Last night after dinner in Indian Wells, I got back in the car to go back to the hotel and the car didn’t smell great.

‘I left my tennis shoes in there and it’s been 38C here so my shoes were very sweaty, damp and smelly.

‘I decided when I got back to the hotel, the shoes needed some air to dry them out a bit. I don’t have a balcony in my room and I didn’t want to leave them in my room as it would stink the room out.

Murray has attached his wedding ring to shoe laces for safe-keeping since his 2015 wedding

The 34-year-old is preparing for the Indian Wells tournament in California this week

‘So I thought I’ll leave the shoes underneath the car to get some air to them and dry them out overnight. When I got back to the car in the morning, the shoes were gone.

‘My tennis shoes for the tournament had been stolen so I had to go to a local pro shop to buy different shoes. Not the end of the world but not ideal.

‘As I was preparing for my practice, my physio said to me, “where is your wedding ring?” And I was like “oh no”.

‘I tie my wedding ring to my shoes when I’m playing because I can’t play with it on my hand. So my wedding ring has been stolen as well so, needless to say, I am in the bad books at home so I want to try and find it.

Murray first attached his wedding ring to his trainers at the BMW Open in Munich in 2015

‘So if anyone can share this or have any clue where they may be, it would be very helpful if I could get it back or get to the bottom of it.’

In the post caption, Murray said: ‘Yes I know I’m an idiot and in hindsight it seems like a terrible idea but i need some help. What should the reward be for getting it back?’

He followed that with the hashtags #ring #shoes #idiot #help #clown.

Murray came up with the novel way of keeping his ring safe following his marriage to Kim Sears in April 2015.

At his first tournament after his wedding, the BMW Open in Munich, Murray attached the ring to the laces of his Adidas trainers.

They served as a good luck charm as he won the tournament and he said at the time: ‘I won’t lose it if it’s tied to my shoelace. As soon as the match is over I put it back on. If I’d keep it in my bag I’d have lost it already.’
