Darts fans cross line twice as objects thrown on stage at Cullen and Smith

Darts fans have been blasted for their poor showing in Rotterdam after objects were thrown onto the stage in the direction of Joe Cullen and Michael Smith.

Played outside of the United Kingdom for the first since the Covid-19 pandemic, the Orange Army were keen to see Michael van Gerwen claim Premier League victory back on home soil. But the Rotterdam crowd bias was of detriment to Smith who was clearly rattled after a supporter threw an object in his direction on stage.

Bully Boy, 31, then missed match darts to set up a final showdown against Joe Cullen and reacted sarcastically by clapping the Dutch crowd. And when MVG faced Rockstar in the evening's last encounter the Rotterdam faithful once again took matters too far.

Like Smith in the semi-final, Cullen was a constant target for the sell-out crowd with boos and jeers aimed in his direction throughout the contest, before another objected was hurled towards the oche. Thankfully it appears no one was hurt but darts broadcaster Dan Dawson has slammed the incidents.

He tweeted: "Anyone chucking stuff on stage (which looks like it happened twice tonight) wants finding on the cameras, identifying, and being banned for life from all darts events. Morons."

Dawson wasn't the only one to criticise the actions of the Orange Army with darts commentator Chris Murphy also hitting out at the distasteful scenes.

He posted on social media: "Also, the only people who should be throwing stuff on the stage are the players. Darts is a great show, don't spoil it."

Despite the poor showing from the crowd, Cullen was not to be deterred. On a pulsating night in Rotterdam, Rockstar claimed his first Premier League crown of the new season with a sensational final display against van Gerwen.

MVG held the darts at 5-5 heading into the deciding leg, but it was Cullen who put himself in the ascendancy thanks to six straight darts at treble 20. The Bradford-born tungsten thrower did miss three match darts to give van Gerwen a flicker of hope but clinched a maiden Premier League honour with a final dart at double four.
