England fans claim ‘it’s coming home’ as Wade and Smith begin World Cup in style

The England team of James Wade and Michael Smith came roaring out of the blocks at the World Cup of Darts, thrashing the Czech Republic 5-1 in their first round match.

The number one seeds lived up to their billing as the pre-tournament favourites with a team average of almost 100 to set up a second round tie against Latvia on Saturday. England have won the tournament four times before and after seeing Wade and Smith complement each other so well, fans are confident they can go all the way in Frankfurt.

Many supporters even rekindled the spirit of the Euro 96 anthem Three Lions by declaring: “It’s coming home!” on social media. Meanwhile, others said the pairing of heavy scorer Smith and expert finisher Wade is a perfect match.

“These two are a match made in heaven. Perfect blend of scoring power & finishing prowess,” tweeted one fan while another added: “Looking very strong this English pairing, Czech Republic played well.”

A third posted: “They look like a perfect team. (being biased maybe)” and a fourth said: “The guys should boss this, Smithy’s on fire at the moment.”

Many fans were also delighted to see Wade so animated on stage following a difficult spell for The Machine, who was taken ill at a European Tour tournament recently and had to spend several days in a German hospital.

Since returning to action, his form has been patchy and he suffered a heavy defeat to eventual winner Michael van Gerwen in the Premier League play-offs at the start of the week.

“Don’t usually see Wadey like this,” pointed out one fan. Another simply said: “On a mission.”

Scotland are also through to the second round after beating Hong Kong 5-1.
