Fans urge Peter Wright to ‘bin’ his darts after Masters defeat to Simon Whitlock

Darts fans have urged reigning world champion Peter Wright to 'ditch' his new arrows after being dumped out in the second round of the Ladbrokes Masters.

Wright, who beat Michael Smith to claim his second Ally Pally crown earlier this month, went down 10-8 to Simon Whitlock in Milton Keynes.

Using his new Phil Taylor-esque darts, Snakebite started well and hit a 92 checkout to hold throw and go 2-1 up before an immediate reply from Whitlock brought things level at 2-2.

The Scotsman edged back in front before the break but lost the next session 4-2 as his Australian opponent established a solid 6-4 lead.

Whitlock then reeled off three of the next four legs to move within touching distance of victory as Wright continued to struggle with his new equipment.

Snakebite threatened to make a game of it by winning the next three legs in a row, but the Magician pinned 65 with a double eight on his final visit to move through to the quarter-finals.

Darts fans took to Twitter after the match to criticise Wright for ditching the arrows he won the world championship with just a few weeks ago.

One person said: "Wright has, I reckon, screwed up with those new darts."

Someone else added: "Gutted. Snakebite got to stop changing those darts Cost you the match I think."

A third person commented: "RIP Wrights darts. They’re going straight into the bin."

While someone else chimed in with: "Get those darts in the bin Peter. They don’t help you at all."

"Why would you swap the darts you won world championship with? Literally makes zero sense," moaned another.

After the match, Whitlock even suggested that Wright's change of darts might have helped him win the tie.

He said: "Yeah, I might have had a little bit of luck here and there.

"I think Peter used the wrong darts tonight. I fancied my chances when I saw him practicing."
