He took his chance brilliantly to win the St Jude Invitational last time out in a three-man play-off, after front-runner Harris English seemed to decide he was actually an English cricketer, and threw it away.
Ancer has been knocking on the door for a while, with near-misses at the Wells Fargo, Valspar and Travelers Championships. He was runner-up the last time the Northern Trust was played here in New York, so he ticks all the boxes.
Mid price: Adam Scott, 40-1.
Another player who has played his best stuff when the Northern Trust is staged here – Liberty National takes the odd-number years, with Boston taking the evens.
Scott won here in 2015, and was a close fifth a couple of years ago, and he is coming off an encouraging effort at the Wyndham Championship, as one of the six players involved in the play-off won by Kevin Kiusner.
The former Masters champion should have won on Sunday, as he missed a four footer for victory on the first play-off hole. But he is not the sort to let a disappointment like that affect him this week.
Long shot: Branden Grace, 80-1
Another of Kisner’s play-off victims at the Wyndham, but that still suggested a welcome return to the form that saw him finish fourth at The Memorial and seventh at the US Open, before a trio of lack-lustre efforts.
The gritty South African produced a respectable enough effort to finish in the top thirty here a couple of years ago, when he was not in the best of form.
Grace is still the only man to go lower than 63 in any of the Majors, and I think the best is yet to come. But the 2016 Heritage remains his biggest win so far, and he needs to step up with victories in elite events like this one.
