STEWARDS launched an investigation into a farcical race where a clueless jockey thought he had won a lap early.
Michael Poy, 23, went for home on 12-1 shot Dente in a race at Kyneton, Victoria, in Australia on Monday.
The pair surged clear of rivals – the only problem was they had another circuit to go.
The commentator picked up on it right away as Poy was seen riding his mount vigorously while those behind were firmly on the bridle.
Caller Matt Hill said: "With 250m to go on the first round, Dente has gone to the front.
"He's given a slap with the whip and I fear the jockey thinks this is a one lap race, in fact I'm convinced of it."
While TV presenter Brent Zerafa said: "Poy will feel pretty bad after that. It does happen every now and again."
Dente, worn out from her exertions, finished eighth, some 19 lengths behind the winner.

Poy, who has won more than £7.5million in his career, was given a two-month ban for his 'negligent ride'.
Rhys Archand, who trains the horse alongside his dad Daryl, said his old man went 'ballistic' when he saw what happened.
And he later told punters.com.au: "Mick obviously knew he'd made a big error after the race.
"When he got back to the scales, everyone could tell he was pretty upset, so there was no need to bash the poor kid.
"He might have avoided a spray from my dad but my mum does the numbers on the scales at Kyneton and she's the disciplinarian of the family.
"She's the one Mick needed to steer clear of!
"The horse has actually gone really well considering.
"And that's the most disappointing thing about it – it was a race we definitely thought we could win.
"We thought we had her spot on and we were confident coming in, so for something like that to happen you just go, 's***, that's a new one'.
"But brainfades do happen.
"Before the race you've got the barrier attendants yelling out 'two laps jockeys, two laps'.
"I’m pretty sure some of the jockeys were yelling out to him during the race too, but he must have had the ear muffs on."
There was a small silver lining though, as Poy went onto win the very next race.
