'I'm going to p*** in a bottle': Shapovalov rows with umpire

‘I’m going to p*** my pants. I’m going to p*** in a bottle’: Denis Shapovalov has an extraordinary row with Australian Open umpire who won’t let him go to the TOILET at the end of a set

  • Denis Shapovalov was desperate for a bathroom break after the fourth set
  • But umpire refused and the Canadian’s frustration began to spill over
  • He declared: ‘I’m going to p*** my pants! I’m going to p*** in a bottle!
  • The 21-year-old eventually regathered his composure and won deciding set

Canadian world No 12 Denis Shapovalov was enraged by an umpire refusing to allow him a bathroom break at the Australian Open.

The 21-year-old had just lost the fourth set of his first-round match against Jannik Sinner when his request to relieve himself was rejected.

‘What happens if I go?’ asked Shapovalov ‘Do I get a fine? I don’t care! What do you mean I can’t go? Are you going to disqualify me? I have to pee!’

Once it became clear that his pleas were falling on deaf ears with the chair umpire refusing the request, Shapovalov grew more frustrated.

He declared: ‘I’m going to p*** my pants! I’m going to p*** in a bottle!

‘You guys are not allowing players to p***? I don’t understand this rule!’

Shapovalov is 11th seed in the tournament and his clash with 19-year-old Italian Sinner was earmarked as the best encounter of the first round.

Both men are exceptional shot makers and tipped as future Grand Slam champions. Sinner came into the match having won 10 in a row and after he took the fourth it seemed he might upset his seeded opponent.

But ultimately Shapovalov managed to regain his composure to win the fifth and deciding set, making the final result 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

After the epic win, it seemed the Canadian had put the bathroom break incident to the back of his mind, tweeting: ‘That was fun.’
