The unbelievable number of Mets injuries is forcing a veteran into an unfamiliar spot.

Catcher James McCann is in Monday’s lineup against the Rockies at first base, a position he has never played in his professional baseball career. Tomas Nido will start at catcher.

Starting first baseman Pete Alonso is on the Mets’ injured list — which has 16 players on it — with a hand sprain. Dominic Smith, a first baseman by trade who has mostly started in left field this season, started the previous two games at first but is back in left Monday night.

McCann, 30, has made 600 career MLB appearances at catcher and 32 at designated hitter. He joined the Mets over the winter on a four-year, $40.6 million contract.
