WIDNES VIKINGS have paid tribute after the devastating news that one of their players passed away following a 'sudden health issue' in training.
Papua New Guinea international Kato Ottio, 23, signed for the Super League side in December and was due to travel to the UK this week ahead of the start of the season.
But a statement from Widnes chief executive James Rule said that Ottio "had developed a sudden health issue whilst training yesterday".
The statement added: “We are devastated to learn that Kato Ottio has passed away this afternoon. Kato was an incredibly talented player, with a bright future ahead of him in Rugby League.
