Luke Humphries is a major winner for the first time after producing a sensational performance to defeat Gerwyn Price in the final of the World Grand Prix.
Humphries has looked fantastic throughout the tournament in Leicester, dispatching Daryl Gurney, Luke Woodhouse, Peter Wright and Joe Cullen en route to the final. Prior to Sunday evening's meeting with Price, Cool Hand had only dropped two sets – both of which came during his quarter-final meeting with Wright.
He continued his magnificent form through to the final, defeating Price to secure a first major win. The 28-year-old roared into a 3-1 lead over the former world champion, taking out a huge 170 finish along the way. Price pulled things back to 4-2, but Humphries was not for catching as he ran out a 5-2 winner.
It marks the end of an arduous five-year hunt for Humphries, who made his televised tournament debut at the 2018 World Championship. He built momentum with semi-final finishes at the Grand Slam of Darts, Players Championship and World Matchplay over the past 12 months, finally getting his name on a trophy in Leicester.
As well as reeling in a £120,000 grand prize for his efforts at the Morningside Arena, Cool Hand will move to a career-high fourth on the PDC Order of Merit. That's enough to take him above final foe Price, who drops down to fifth and takes a £60,000 share of the prize pot.
Humphries' display this week was all the more surprising given his previous best at the World Grand Prix was a second-round finish in his 2021 debut. He then bowed out to Chris Dobey in a disappointing first-round exit last year.
