Man Utd legend Paul Scholes calls Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta a ‘disgrace’ for his actions during controversial clash

PAUL SCHOLES has called Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta a "disgrace" after some of his antics during yesterday's fiery match against Manchester United.

The Red Devils icon was unhappy with how he thought Arteta tried to influence referee Craig Pawson during United's 3-1 defeat in North London.


The match included plenty of flashpoints, with both teams being awarded spot kicks and United having a trio of other shouts waved away.

Arsenal were awarded their penalty in the 32nd minute, after initially thinking they'd scored, when Bukayo Saka was adjudged to have been fouled in the build-up to Eddie Nketiah's offside goal.

When Pawson was instructed to take a look at the pitchside monitor, Arteta raced over to him to protest.

On the Spaniard's actions, Scholes, 47, said: "I think Arteta is a disgrace there.

"He shouldn’t be allowed to do that.

"If you see it again, he actually goes to the crowd to try and influence the referee a little.

"All the players around them as well. That shouldn’t be allowed."

Saka's converted spot-kick doubled Arsenal's lead to 2-0, after Nuno Tavares had put them ahead early on.

Cristiano Ronaldo pulled one back for the Red Devils by scoring his 100th Premier League goal, but Granit Xhaka's thunderbolt after Bruno Fernandes missed from 12 yards settled the match.

After the frenetic game, the excitable Arteta urged his team to stay calm.

He said: "I worry even when I win, so imagine.

"But this is the game, and we have to be focused in what we do and what we want to do, and don’t get too down or too excited after winning."

Man United now sit sixth in the table, six points behind the Gunners having played a game more.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick gave up on qualifying for next season's Champions League after the match.

He told BT Sport: "Yeah, pretty sure for me even before that game it was not very likely, but after this result top four is gone."
