LAZIO are considering a move for Manchester United star Juan Mata, according to reports.
The Spaniard is set to be out of contract this summer, having become a bit-part player at Old Trafford.
Having turned 33 last month, the attacking midfielder is seeking his next opportunity – and the security of a multi-year deal.
According to Il Tempo, Lazio could offer Mata a two-year contract – with the option of a third season on top.
Boss Simone Inzaghi would like to sign the experienced star, having missed out on one of his compatriots last season.
Lazio appeared all set to sign David Silva 12 months ago, upon the expiry of his contract at Manchester City.
But the City legend performed a last minute u-turn, instead joining Real Sociedad.
The Biancocelesti want to use Mata as a left midfielder or No10, in competition with former Liverpool ace Luis Alberto.
Lazio are currently sixth in the Serie A table, although securing Champions League football for next season isn't an impossibility.
Inzaghi's men trail fourth-placed AC Milan by five points with five matches remaining – and a crucial game in hand.

Lazio's run-in isn't too difficult, although they do have a huge derby against Roma on May 15.
Mata, meanwhile, is unlikely to play many more times for the Red Devils before the season is out.
Since joining United for £37million back in January 2014, he has played 269 times for the club, scoring 50 goals and laying on 47 assists.
But his appearances have dried up this term, having started only four Premier League games.
In fact, Mata has played just two minutes of league action since December 17.
