Man Utd takeover update: Jim Ratcliffe blow as companies make net losses

Prospective Man Utd owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has suffered a blow to his hopes of landing the club after seeing his two major chemical firms swing to net losses.

According to Bloomberg, both Ineos Group Holdings SA and Ineos Quattro Holdings Ltd went into the red over the April-June financial quarter – the first time it has happened since 2020.

This was due to excess chemical supply causing an upshoot in demand.

As a result, Ratcliffe's spending power could be limited.

The 70-year-old has a fortune of £14.4m and has tabled a bid worth around £5bn to purchase United from the Glazers.

Man Utd broke Sancho promise by signing Ronaldo

Manchester United promised Jadon Sancho the No7 shirt for his transfer from Borussia Dortmund, according to The Athletic.

However, after he completed his £73million transfer from the German outfit the club went back on their word.

Instead, Sancho was handed the No25 shirt number after United ended up re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo – who was himself handed the shirt by Edinson Cavani.

This reportedly raised questions about the level of care United offered Sancho following his UK return.

    More on Pellistri Mexico camp

Pellistri revealed the inside details of his pre-season training camp.

In his interview with United Review, he added: "[It was] Very hot!

I had to train quite late because the first day, I tried to train as normal, more or less, three o’clock but it was impossible because of the sun. So I started to train later, like nine o’clock in the night."

He also the camp has made him ready to do the nitty-gritty side of the game.

The Uruguayan continued: "It's very important nowadays. Nowadays, the wingers, they do not have only to attack but they also have to defend.

"So, before, you’d think, okay, I’m a winger. I just attack but, nowadays, you have to defend the same way that you attack.

"So that’s why I had to train in Mexico because the players need to do all those things in modern football. So, yes, that’s also why we have to defend.

"You have to do everything but that's the way it is. And, if you want to win, you have to do it."

Over the international break, Pellistri started against Chile before playing 20 minutes off the bench against Ecuador.

Pellistri reveals personal training camp get ready for United minutes

Facundo Pellistri has revealed he used a personal training camp in Mexico to get himself ready for the season.

Speaking to United Review, the club's official matchday programme, the 21-year-old revealed how his Mexico camp has prepared him for the season.

He said: "Nowadays, football is, each time, difficult. You can’t have holidays so you have to keep training during any holidays.

"So that’s why everyone keeps pushing because now the seasons are, every time, harder. And if we want to win everything, we have to train that way.

"It’s how it is now. And, of course, we do what we like. We like to play. We want to play lots of games and, if you don’t train, you can’t do that."

The winger is expected to be more heavily involved in the first team due to other players missing for a variety of reasons.

Yorke says United missed boat in not signing Arsenal star

Dwight Yorke has claimed Man Utd missed a trick by not signing Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.

The Scot is on loan at Real Sociedad in Spain after losing his place at Arsenal.

However, given Man Utd's left-back crisis which saw them loan Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham on deadline day, Yorke believes Tierney would have been a superior option.

Speaking to Genting Casino, he said: "I’m not really happy with Man United’s transfer window business.

"When you look at where Man United are as a team, we’ve signed names that won’t get people too excited.

"I think we missed the boat with Kieran Tierney as I like his energy, despite his injury issues.

"We’ve finally signed a traditional striker, but I think the manager trusts the players he has and he has to make the most of it.

"I assume he’s happy with the squad, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens."

Five free agents Man Utd could sign

Manchester United's late injury crisis has thrust Ten Hag into an unforeseen problem.

With Facundo Pellistri the only fit right-winger at the club, United could dip their toes into the market for a free agent.

There are also issues at left-back and in central defence.

Here are five options available to United:

    1. Eden Hazard – not the player he used to be but could be an option due to his versatility along the front line
    2. Santi Mina- The 27-year-old Spaniard scored six goals in the Saudi Pro League last season with Al-Shabab.
    3. Oussama Idrissi -helped Feyenoord win the Dutch league last season with ten goal contributions.
    4. Andre Ayew – Proven Premier League player and can pose problems for opponents.
    5. Jesse Lingard – While very unlikely the ex-United star has proven Prem quality and handy versatility.

Yorke slams Ten Hag for making Sancho affair public

Man Utd legend Dwight Yorke has slammed Erik ten Hag for airing his Jadon Sancho criticism in public.

Speaking to Genting Casino he said: "I’ve been in situations as a player where I thought the manager was wrong.

"For example, I didn’t always agree with Sir Alex Ferguson, and there were a few occasions when I didn't think his decisions were 100 per cent right.

"We’re all human beings, and disagreeing with someone is just a part of life.

"I believe that the Sancho scenario is a case of the manager making a football decision, and who’s to say that footballing decisions are right or wrong?

"It’s always going to be subjective and the manager needs to do what’s best for the team.

"With Sancho, you have a situation where the player thinks he’s done well in training, but the manager doesn’t think he’s done enough. In my opinion, it’s a conservation best had internally, with Ten Hag giving his reasons.

"It’s then up to the player to react to it and take it on the chin. He could also take it personally.

"We don’t know the full extent of what’s going on as we’re not there to make a judgment on it."

Dortmund coaches partnered Haaland with Sancho

Jadon Sancho was partnered up with Erling Haaland at Borussia Dortmund, it has been revealed.

The Athletic report Sancho was partnered with the now Man City ace in an effort to get Haaland's professionalism to rub off on him.

Interim coach Lucien Favre's ex-assistant Edin Terzic had them pairing up in training, on the coach and in the dressing room.

During his time as assistant, Terzic would personally knock on Sancho's hotel room door before meetings.

When he was placed in charge, he told coaches to keep give special attention to him.

A Dortmund source said: "Jadon would go through some really good spells and some really bad spells.

"There’s a world-class player there. But he takes a lot of work."

The reports states the tactic, which was brought in by the newly-appointed Erik ten Hag and his coaches last season, had some initial success.

However, it is understood to have not lasted for very long.

There appear to have been positive steps in the Sancho situation after the winger deleted his tweet – formerly pinned to the top of his page – hitting back at Ten Hag's criticism of his training performances.

    Maguire tipped for new role

Harry Maguire has been tipped for a new role at Manchester United by ex-Man Utd assistant Mike Phelan.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Phelan lifted the lid on the turmoil at the club in the closing stages of his latest stint there.

But Phelan, who also managed the England international at Hull, has offered up a new lease of life for Maguire at Old Trafford… in defensive midfield.

Phelan said: "I had him at Hull.

"Harry came to the club from Sheffield United and he played a bit as a sitting defensive midfield player there.

"At Hull, he was building up to the player we thought he would be."

He continued: "We always knew he had strengths and weaknesses, most players do.

"Then the United thing came along and at that time, Harry was a top player.

"Nobody could say he wasn't a top player in that position having played at Leicester.

"Yes, the fee was a lot. But you're not in control of that. Having come to United, he did really well. He had composure on the ball."

Harry Maguire's nightmare continued as he scored an own goal during England's 3-1 win over Scotland yesterday.

The defender scored an own goal in the 67th minute after coming on as a half-time substitute.

England has been something of a sanctuary for the defender of late, with Southgate continuing to back the centre-half.

But it seems that his United form is now catching up with him, his own-goal causing Scotland's most dangerous spell in the whole game.

    Maguire's nightmare night

Harry Maguire still cannot catch a break – even on international duty.

The defender scored an own-goal for England in the 67th minute which preceded Scotland's only period of dominance in the game.

Maguire had been on the field just 22 minutes after Southgate continued to show his faith in the midfielder by bringing him on for Marc Guehi at half-time.

The own goal will do the defender no favours and give further ammunition to critics of Southgate that use the selection of Maguire as a stick to beat the manager with.
