    Maguire's nightmare night

Harry Maguire's nightmare continued as he scored an own goal during England's 3-1 win over Scotland yesterday.

The defender scored an own goal in the 67th minute after coming on as a half-time substitute.

England has been something of a sanctuary for the defender of late, with Southgate continuing to back the centre-half.

But it seems that his United form is now catching up with him, his own-goal causing Scotland's most dangerous spell in the whole game.

    Maguire's nightmare night

Harry Maguire still cannot catch a break – even on international duty.

The defender scored an own-goal for England in the 67th minute which preceded Scotland's only period of dominance in the game.

Maguire had been on the field just 22 minutes after Southgate continued to show his faith in the midfielder by bringing him on for Marc Guehi at half-time.

The own goal will do the defender no favours and give further ammunition to critics of Southgate that use the selection of Maguire as a stick to beat the manager with.

    No interest in El Ghazi

SunSport understand that there is no interest from Manchester United in former Aston Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi.

Reports emerged yesterday that United were looking at the free agent to address their shortcomings on the right wing.

El Ghazi, 28 has been without a club since being released by PSV this summer.

He attended United's 2-1 loss to Arsenal which only added to the speculation and has also worked with Erik Ten Hag before.

But there is no chance of a deal happening.

United to target four key signings

The Manchester Evening News report that Manchester United will look to strengthen four key areas next summer.

United intend to strengthen at full-back, centre-back, central midfield and in attack, with outgoings expected in most departments.

United are keen on Bayer Leverkusen pair Jeremie Frimpong (right-back) and Edmond Tapsoba (centre-back).

They are also interested in Evan Ferguson but he would cost at least £130million.

Ten Hag is also keen to sign another attacking player who can play across the front three sue to Mason Greenwood's departure from the squad.

    Sancho deletes tweet

Jadon Sancho has deleted the tweet he posted criticising Erik Ten Hag after being left out of Manchester United's squad against Arsenal.

Ten Hag said that the winger had been left out of the squad due to his attitude in training.

To which, Sancho uploaded a tweet and Instagram story claiming to have been made a scapegoat.

Sancho and Ten Hag met yesterday for showdown talks and it appears that removing the posts may be the first step towards a United retribution.

Sancho's original tweet read: "Please don't believe everything you read! I will not allow people saying things that is completely untrue. I have conducted myself in training very well this week.

"I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won't go into, I have been a scapegoat for a long time which isn't fair! All I want to do is play football with a smile on my face and contribute to my team.

"I respect all decisions that are made by the coaching staff, I play with fantastic players and grateful to do so which I know every week is a challenge. I will continue to fight for this badge no matter what!"

Mike Phelan hints at shock positional change for Harry Maguire

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has hinted at a shock positional move for the out-of-favour Harry Maguire.

Phelan was Sir Alex Ferguson's right hand-man for five years at Old Trafford before returning for Ole Gunner Solskjaer's reign.

Phelan coached Maguire when he was the manager at Hull, and said that the centre-back could play higher up the pitch.

Phelan said: "Harry came to the club from Sheffield United and he played a bit as a sitting defensive midfield player there.

"At Hull, he was building up to the player we thought he would be."

    Maguire benched for England

Harry Maguire has been droppped by Gareth Southgate for tonight's friendly against Scotland.

Maguire has been a personal favourite of Southgate despite not featuring heavily under Ten Hag last season.

He is currently United's fourth choice centre-half, and was stripped of the captaincy in the summer.

Maguire started for England last time out against Ukraine but Southgate has opted for Lewis Dunk this time out.

Marcus Rashford starts for England on the left wing tonight.

Martial release may lead to Ferguson acquisition

Further to the report that Manchester United will likely release Anthony Martial next summer, The Manchester Evening News claim that it will clear the decks for a move for Evan Ferguson.

The 18-year-old Brighton striker has continued his fine form of last season with four goals in his opening four games for The Seagulls.

It is likely that any move for the striker would cost north of £100million.

And United will look to make room for the youngster in part by releasing Martial, who they signed for £36million in 2015.

    United may release Anthony Martial

The Manchester Evening News report that Manchester United may release Anthony Martial if his stagnation continues.

The forward's contract is set to expire this summer but United have the option to extend by another year.

But Martial has struggled with injury in recent years and rarely finds himself in the United team these days.

The signing of Rasmus Hojlund has only pushed him further down the pecking order.

It is more likely than not, at this year that United will not trigger their extension and Martial will be free to leave as a free agent.

'Compromise is possible' between Jadon Sancho and Erik Ten Hag

Former United star Louis Saha has said that he can still see a way that Jadon Sancho might be reintegrated into the United team.

Saha told Betfred: "The two of them can still mend their relationship as neither of them are egotistical. They're both smart and they need to both think about the future of Manchester United, which is the most important thing. I believe a compromise is possible.

“For over a year now, Jadon hasn’t been at his best and now it’s time for him to perform, regardless of whether he’s on good terms with his manager or not. He should want redemption on the field and I believe that he’s capable of achieving this.

"The whole situation between Jadon and Erik ten Hag is very strange and I’m sure both of them have regrets over the spat."

The Trivela became a trademark for Quaresma, who had a habit of scoring a number of goals with the outside of his boot.

    Phelan on Ronaldo

Mike Phelan has lifted the lid on all aspects of Manchester United during his tenure as Ole Gunnar Solskjær's assistant.

And one of those things was the turbulent return of Cristiano Ronaldo to the club.

On Ronaldo, Phelan said: "He still had massively high standards and was terrific to work with. But I'd probably say a tougher mindset. He had been at Man Utd, he had been Portugal's ever-present, he had been at Madrid.

"I liked it because he didn't want his standards to drop, he wanted other people's standards to come up. And sometimes you lose a few people along the way when that happens.

"I remember certain times when he pushed and pushed hard, and he didn't get much reaction or much response. And there was frustration."

    Phelan on Maguire

Ex-Manchester United coach Mike Phelan insists Harry Maguire can overcome the flaws in his game.

We always knew he had strengths and weaknesses, most players do. Then the United thing came along and at that time, Harry was a top player.

Nobody could say he wasn't a top player in that position having played at Leicester. Yes, the fee was a lot. But you're not in control of that.

He's a good footballer. Yes there are weaknesses in his game. But they were there in his days at Hull.

Some say you should improve your weaknesses, but I'm a believer in keeping on playing to strengths.

His ability on the ball, he can read the game, he can definitely score a goal, and he's a good guy. He's one of the good guys in football.

    Phelan on Rangnick

Ex-Manchester United coach Mike Phelan revealed that Ralf Rangnick's appointment as caretaker manager was a concern from the start.

I thought it was difficult. Not difficult from the point of Ralf being the manager, but the circumstances of him being the manager.

It wasn't easy with it because Manchester United – does it need a caretaker manager?

It needs a proper manager – and I'm not saying Ralf wasn't a proper manager, but he came in under this caretaker role having been one at a smaller club.

I always thought it would be difficult for him to establish momentum, to sort out the players in a short space of time.

    Phelan on Ronaldo

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mikel Phelan revealed how different Cristiano Ronaldo was after his return to Old Trafford.

The second time round, he came in a lot older and a lot more opinionated, strong-willed.

He still had massively high standards and was terrific to work with. But I'd probably say a tougher mindset. He had been at Man Utd, he had been Portugal's ever-present, he had been at [Real] Madrid.

I liked it because he didn't want his standards to drop, he wanted other people's standards to come up. And sometimes you lose a few people along the way when that happens.

I remember certain times when he pushed and pushed hard, and he didn't get much reaction or much response. And there was frustration.

    Have a bad Phel-ing

Former Manchester United assistant coach Mike Phelan has opened up about the club'sstruggles during his second stint at Old Trafford from 2019 to 2022 under then manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

There were issues going on in that time that weren't going on the first time round [under Sir Alex Ferguson].

There was a lot more attention to things in the background, within the club and the atmosphere.

You were dealing with these things a lot more than the bits you wanted to focus on which was the football.

But when you're the manager of a massive club, the results get you.

    Major historic change

Sky Sports and TNT Sports are hoping to make a series of changes to their in-game Premier League coverage.

TNT Sports, formerly known as BT Sport, introduced some unique features ahead of Arsenal’s game with Nottingham Forest last month.

In one instance, presenter Jules Breach and Ally McCoist spoke to the Gunners’ skipper Martin Odegaard at the entrance to the Emirates.

Breach also completed a link in the tunnel during half-time while the players came back to the pitch.

The changes proved to be a major success among fans, so both TNT Sports and Sky Sports are now keen to implement new features to enhance the in-game experience.

According to The Daily Mail, in-game interviews and cameras in the locker rooms could soon become the norm.

    Flick the switch

Former Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick gave a blunt response when asked if he could become the next Germany boss.

Hansi Flick’s terrible tenure with the four-time world champions came to an end on Sunday after a dismal 4-1 home defeat to Japan.

And Flick’s exit made him the first ever manager to be sacked in the German national team’s history.

However, Austria head coach Rangnick had an extremely blunt response for reporters when asked if he planned to jump ship.

    The 65-year-old tacticiansimply stated: “No.”
