Darts titan Michael van Gerwen once tiled the bathroom of Arsenal great Dennis Bergkamp before making it big in sport himself.
It’s routine for players to start out by combining their darts career with a so-called ‘normal’ job – and three-time world champion Van Gerwen was no different.
The Dutchman was a tiler in his homeland and once landed a job at the home of iconic striker Bergkamp, who played for Ajax and Inter Milan either side of his success-laden spell with the Gunners, where he spent 11 years.

“I used to work as a tiler. The biggest job I ever had was putting up the tiles in Bergkamp’s bathroom,” he once revealed to the Mirror.
“We had to make sure we did a really good job on it. You don’t want to mess up when you are working for a legend like Bergkamp. When I was fitting those tiles, I never thought I would be a millionaire by the time I was 24.

“But it proves that if you work hard and do well at the major tournaments, you can make a good living out of being a professional darts player. I don’t think I would have been this rich if I had worked as a tiler until I was 70.”
Now 34, Van Gerwen is now a multi-millionaire having collected a wealth of titles during his illustrious career, including numerous World Matchplay and Premier League crowns.
The Green Machine is in Premier League action tonight as the league stage culminates in Aberdeen. Van Gerwen is already assured of a top-four finish and place in the play-offs at the O2 next Thursday.
However, after a poor run of results, Van Gerwen has dropped to third in the table and will be looking to end the league phase strongly and take some momentum to the O2. MVG faces Chris Dobey in his quarter-final.
