Colorado College named Kris Mayotte head coach of the Tigers’ hockey program Wednesday.

Mayotte, 38, was an assisted coach at the University of Michigan the past two seasons. He replaces Mike Haviland, who was released after CC finished 4-17-2 last month.

Mayotte, a four-year goalie at Union College from 2002-2006, has been a Division I assistant coach for nine years. He worked under Greg Carvel at St. Lawrence from 2012-14 and under Nate Leaman at Providence from 2014-19. The Friars won the 2015 NCAA championship.

“Kris is one of the brightest coaches I have been around in hockey. He is an excellent communicator and has won championships at the highest level. He will lead Colorado College to great success,” Leaman said in a statement.

Michigan coach Mel Pearson added Mayotte to his staff before the 2019-20 season.

“Colorado College is getting a great coach and a great person in Kris Mayotte,” Pearson said in a statement. “He is a rising star (and) has helped produce a winning program everywhere he has coached. Kris is very detail-oriented, well organized and made our team better. He is a tireless recruiter and opened up new areas for us on the recruiting trail. One of his greatest strengths is building relationships with his players.”

CC has not had a winning record since 2011‑12 when it finished 18-16-2 — a year before Haviland took over for Scott Owens. Owens led the Tigers to 11-consecutive winning seasons and seven NCAA Tournament appearances from 2000 to 2011.

CC’s new on-campus Robson Arena is scheduled to open in October.
