Napoli supporters protest against Kalidou Koulibaly transfer as special Serie A stats show Chelsea are getting bargain | The Sun

NAPOLI fans protested Kalidou Koulibaly's move to Chelsea – especially as the Blues seem to have bagged a bargain.

Koulibaly, 31, flew to London with his agent on Wednesday after a £34million agreement between the two clubs and is set to undergo a medical before joining the Premier League club for pre-season in the US.

Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli had a heated interaction with some disgruntled fans as the players left for pre-season.

Giuntoli and Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis previously insisted the star defender was not for sale.

According to Football Italia, furious supporters yelled at the sporting director and one of them asked, "Didn't you say he was not transferable?"

Giuntoli responded: "It does not depend on us."

Chelsea appear to have completed a stunning deal as Koulibaly has stood out as one of the top defenders in Italy since his arrival to Naples from Genkin 2014.

In the last eight years, the Senegal international has been the outfield player to have completed the most passes (14528), won the most tackles (344) and recovered the most balls (1716) in Serie A.

The Blues are in dire need of reinforcement in defence after Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen's departure to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

Captain Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso could also leave in the summer transfer window.

Napoli are also looking for someone to replace the 31-year-old amid a summer clear out that saw Lorenzo Insigne and Dries Mertens leave as they are trying to introduce a salary cap.

The Senegalese star was on €6m (£5.1m) per season and was initially offered an extension with a large pay cut.

Napoli later increase their bid to cover his wages with bonuses but Koulibaly wasn't convinced.
