Newcastle star Joelinton being investigated by police over haircut after posting snap with barber during lockdown

NEWCASTLE striker Joelinton is being investigated by police for breaking Covid rules by getting his haircut during lockdown.

The Magpies' £40million man was branded a 'Covidiot' for sharing a picture of him in the barber's chair on social media on Friday.

And now Northumbria police are considering taking action against the player and his hairdresser Tom Baxter.

A police spokesman said: "We are aware of a social media post involving a 24-year-old man and a 35-year-old man who may be in breach of coronavirus restrictions.

"We will be speaking to those involved and consider any further action under the coronavirus legislation."

Newcastle City Council is also investigating the matter.

Newcastle vowed to punish the striker for his actions.

He posted the snap to his Instagram story before quickly deleting it but eagle-eyed fans were quick to share screen grabs and berate the 24-year-old online.

After the news became public, Baxter labelled the Brazilian an idiot for uploading the picture even though the snipper was also posing for the shot.

He said: "Yes it was lockdown and we should not have done it, I should not have done it.

"But I'm not a bad lad and he's not a bad lad.

"Everyone has probably broken the rules at some point.

"During the first lockdown everyone took it seriously but now I think people are fed up with it."

A Newcastle spokesperson said at the time: "We are disappointed by the image shared by Joelinton.

“There are clear Covid-19 protocols in place and the club continues to guide and educate its players on their responsibilities.

“The club will be taking appropriate action internally.”

Joelinton has scored just three goals since signing from Hoffenheim 18 months ago.

And he now spends most games on the bench after the arrival of Callum Wilson at the end of last season.
