Peter Wright leaves Wayne Mardle lost for words with Ally Pally darts admission

After a worrying period for Peter Wright and his family following a health scare for his wife, the real Snakebite was back just in time for the start of the World Darts Championship.

Joanne Wright, the mastermind behind her husband’s whacky outfits and hair-dos, is on the mend after being rushed to A&E during the Grand Slam of Darts in November. Good news from the doctors last week allowed both to focus on the Ally Pally extravaganza as Wright looks to defend the trophy he won for the second time last January.

While Peter has been pounding the practice board, Jo has been at work creating a new costume, which her hubby donned for his second round match against Mickey Mansell.

He strode to the oche as a Santa-theme Grinch before dancing across the stage in trademark fashion to the Pitbull hit ‘Don’t Stop the Party’.

Another familiar theme for Wright entering a tournament revolved around which set of darts he was going to use. Snakebite is infamous for changing his equipment as often as he changes his socks. He has even been known to switch darts in the middle of matches.

Just a few hours before his match against Mansell, Wright still hadn’t decided which set he was going to use, although he had at least narrowed it down to two.

Asked by Sky Sports if he knew which darts he was using, he said: “One of two sets.”

Commentator Wayne Mardle then chipped in: “So you don’t know now which set you’ll be playing with, in four hours?”

When Wright replied “no” there was an awkward silence as Mardle seemingly struggled to process the information.

Wright expanded: “It’s the gold ones, which I won with last year, or the first World Championship ones.”

Whichever set he chose, they did the trick as he strolled to a 3-0 over Mansell, who had beaten Ben Robb in the first round at the start of the evening. After the match, Wright said he would try out more sets before his third round tie after Christmas.
