If Simone Biles’s performance on the vault is any indication of how the U.S. women will do tonight, the Americans have a huge problem. She had planned to do a Yurchenko vault with 2½ twists, but bailed out at the last second and only executed 1½ twists. And then on the landing, she stumbled backward. This is incredibly out of the ordinary for her and the watered down vault is a massive blow to the U.S. team. The vault received a 5.0 for difficulty — that’s 0.8 lower than the Amanar. Her total score was 13.766 — extremely rare for someone with her track record and ability.
