Southampton next manager odds – Eddie Howe leads Frank Lampard and Sam Allardyce for Saints job after price drop

EDDIE HOWE is the leading contender to be appointed Southampton's next permanent manager.

That's according to bookmakers Betfair, who've shortened his price from 4/1 to 10/3 after Sunday's defeat to Wolves.

Ralph Hasenhuttl is now available at 14/1 to be the first Premier League manager axed as the Saints continued their winless start to the 2021-22 campaign.

Raul Jimenez scored his first goal since October 2020 to give Wolves a 1-0 victory at St Mary's.

The result leaves Southampton in 16th position having drawn four of their opening six fixtures.

However, Hasenhuttl has masterminded draws with West Ham, Manchester United and Manchester City during that run.

The Austrian, 54, has also had to contend with the loss of top scorer Danny Ings, Jannik Vestergaard and Ryan Bertrand.

Nevertheless, Betfair are expecting a difficult season on the South Coast.

And the bookmakers have already drawn up a list of potential candidates if Hasenhuttl is axed with 43-year-old Howe leading the pack.

The former Cherries boss was linked with several roles over the summer and went as short as 1/16 to take over at Celtic before a late U-turn.

Frank Lampard is next at 17/2.

The England hero has been out of work since being dismissed as Chelsea manager in January but is itching for a new role in management.

Alan Pardew, who is currently technical director at Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia, is third favourite at 9/1.

Steve Cooper, who's just taken a role at Nottingham Forest, is available at 11/1 with Mark Hughes and Sam Allardyce sharing odds of 12/1.
