'Two of best in history' – Barcelona legend Gerard Pique wades into Lionel Messi against Cristiano Ronaldo GOAT debate

BARCELONA legend Gerard Pique has had his say on the Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi GOAT debate.

The centre-back said they are 'two of the best in the history of the sport' but gave one of them the edge.

Pique, 34, played with Ronaldo for a short time at Manchester United, and Messi, 34 for years at the Nou Camp. But he did not let that cloud his judgement.

The Spaniard told BT Sport: "I think that they are both amazing.

"We are talking about two of the best players, not just in the world but the history of this sport.

"I always said Messi has some talent that no one has.

"I mean, he has the ball and his speed controlling the ball.

"The ball doesn't go two metres from his foot, it's always there.

"It's impossible to catch him, this talent I didn't see from anyone.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is such a different player, they are very different.

"He is tall, strong, he's really complete. He can do anything.

"He can do goals with the head, free-kicks, penalties, take one on one.

"But for me it's like Messi is not human but Cristiano is the best of the humans."

Paris Saint-Germain star Messi won a controversial seventh Ballon d'Or this year to put him two ahead of United legend Ronaldo.

Although former Real Madrid icon Ronaldo's stats this season make for better reading.

The Portuguese has chipped in with 15 goal contributions since returning to Old Trafford compared to Messi's 10 at PSG.

Ronaldo, 36, also became the leading international goalscorer and the first star to reach and pass 800 goals.

Opinion is still split among fans but one man who shares Pique's view is Gary Lineker who once said of Messi: "He is the best player who ever donned a pair of football boots.

"If you put all those things together, he frankly is not a human being."
