‘A Discovery of Witches’: Will There Be a Season 3?

What’s next for Matthew and Diana? A Discovery of Witches Season 2 came to an end on March 13 with an episode that left a number of key questions unresolved. Fortunately, fans will get to see the final chapter in this TV show about witches, vampires, and daemons. However, they’ll have to wait a while for the final episodes to arrive.

[Spoilers ahead for A Discovery of Witches Season 2.]

‘A Discovery of Witches’ Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger

The second season of A Discovery of Witches came to an end with Matthew (Matthew Goode) and Diana (Teresa Palmer) once again preparing to travel through time.

The odd-couple pair (she’s a witch; he’s a vampire) went back to the 16th century at the end of season 1. Their goal was to find Ashmole 782, aka the Book of Life, a mysterious volume that promises to reveal secrets about the true nature of witches, vampires, and daemons. Matthew and Diana (who is now pregnant) did manage to discover the book. However, its powerful magical properties means they can’t travel through time with it. Still, they gained some valuable information that  — along with Diana’s advanced witch training — should help them defeat their enemies when they return to the present.

That’s good, because the situation between Matthew and Diana’s friends and family and the Congregation has deteriorated even more since they left. A murderous vampire who seems to have a link to Matthew’s family is killing people in Oxford, which jeopardizes the de Clermont family’s hold on power. Plus, Peter Knox (Owen Teale) is intent on kidnapping baby Margaret, a witch whose parents are daemons. Then, in the finale’s final moments, Knox staged an attack on Sept-Tours in an attempt to get his hands on a missing page from the Book of Life. In the process, Knox apparently killed Diana’s aunt Emily (Valarie Pettiford).

‘A Discovery of Witches’ has been renewed for season 3

There are three Discovery of Witches books. Seasons 1 and 2 of the show were based on the first two novels in author Deborah Harkness’ trilogy: A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night. The story concludes in The Book of Life

Fortunately for fans, A Discovery of Witches has already been renewed for season 3. The third season was greenlit way back in 2018, after season 1 aired in the U.K.

“The enormous success of the show in the U.K. and Europe has made it possible for future seasons to be greenlit and go into production,” Harkness shared in a November 2018 Facebook update.

‘A Discovery of Witches’ Season 3 promises ‘revolution’

Season 2 of A Discovery of Witches may have just ended, but fans can already get a glimpse at season 3. A just-released teaser makes it clear that the de Clermonts and their allies are going to war. The powerful vampire Gerbert (Trevor Eve) is determined to unseat his rivals for good. But Matthew and Diana won’t go down without a fight. They want a world where humans and different species of creatures can co-exist peacefully, rather than the segregated existence that’s been the norm for centuries.

“We need more than a fight. We need a revolution,” Diana says.

A Discovery of Witches Season 3 will premiere in 2022. A Discovery of Witches Season 2 is currently streaming on Sundance Now, Shudder, and AMC+.
