After Life has been airing on Netflix and season three marks the final instalment in the series. Tony Johnson (played by Ricky Gervais) started to see the positive sides to life. The comedian has since opened up about why journalist Sandy (Mandeep Dhillon) was absent from the final season.
What happened to Sandy in After Life?
Sandy was a new journalist at the Tambury Gazette and she worked under Tony for the first two seasons.
For the final outing, her character was replaced by Kath Hughes as trainee Coleen.
Actress Dhillon had not given anything away about why she was not a part of the final season.
Her character’s absence was not discussed in the new episodes, viewers only found out there was a new trainee on the scene.
Ricky Gervais has since explained why Dhillon was not able to join the cast.
He said: “We tried to make it work with Mandeep. So did she, but she had a contract with this thing in America.
“It got closer and she just couldn’t do it,” he continued to Radio Times.
“Because of Covid, she had to go early. And that’s fine. These things happen all the time.
“You can’t get angry about it, so you rewrite it and I hope it still turns out great.”
The star said he always found himself cutting the episodes down, so it was a good opportunity to hone in on important storylines.
Sandy was not the only character missing, as fans were curious about what happened to Roxy (Roisin Conaty).
Gervais said he had not seen the comedian in a long time and presumed she was busy.
Roxy was a sex worker who had been in a relationship with Pat (Joe Wilkinson).
The pair broke up off-screen as Roxy was adamant she did not want to give up her job.
Fans had taken to Twitter to express their disappointment over the absences.
