Alan Carr thought he was grieving for dead dog but had life-threatening illness

Alan Carr loved his Irish Red Setter Bev and was heartbroken when he lost his faithful four-legged friend.

Back in 2022, the comedian's ex-husband, Paul Drayton, announced that the pair had "a heavy broken heart" after putting their beloved pooch to sleep.

He explained on social media: “It is with a heavy broken heart that myself and Alan @chattyman had to make the hardest decision to make our last act of love and let our Bev go.

He continued: "She has been the best companion I could have hoped for. She has been my rock and saviour on many many occasions and I cannot begin to tell you how much we will miss her."

Yet 47 year old comedian Alan has revealed that he was so consumed by grief over the loss of Bev, he failed to notice he had salmonella poisoning – a life-threatening condition – all while filming an Agatha Christie documentary, dressed as her character Hercule Poirot.

Chatting to Seann Walsh and Jack Dee on their Oh My Dog! podcast Alan said: "When Bev went I've never known grief like it. There was a salmonella outbreak, and when she was put down I had a chicken sandwich the same day. I rang my mum and I said: 'Bev's gone, and I don't feel well.' And she said: 'You're grieving, people grieve in different ways.'"

Luckily, Alan soon realised that his food poisoning symptoms were slightly different to his grief and sought help, successfully averting disaster.

He also told Seann and Jack how Bev could 'see ghosts' and alerted him and his mum to 'a presence in their home'.

Alan explained: "He would see someone walk from the dining room into a kitchen, where a door used to be," adding that the dog would then growl at the phantom guest.

He heartbreakingly added: "I am desperate to get a dog, my life is empty. It breaks my heart."

Alan is currently appearing on our TVs on Sunday evenings, as a judge on talent show Mamma Mia! I Have A Dream. The show documents the search for two new, unknown musical theatre performers to play the roles of Sophie Sheridan and Sky Ramand in the West End production of the musical Mamma Mia!.

Earlier this week, OK! revealed how Alan is said to have found love again, almost two years after his split from husband Paul – and that his new beau already has Adele's approval.

The star has reportedly embarked on a relationship with celebrity hairdresser Callum Heslop, 27, with the new couple currently enjoying a trip to America.

Alan is touring the US as part of his Regional Trinket comedy tour, with his new boyfriend said to be joining him on his travels.

And during their time in America, the couple are said to have received Adele's blessing, after she attended one of Alan's stand-up shows earlier this month.
