Presenter Alex Scott was moved to tears on stage after hearing one inspirational story while hosting Children in Need.

During the BBC special, which aired this evening, viewers heard the story of an 11-year-old boy called Shay who was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome.

In a pre-recorded clip, people learned Shay and his family had had a difficult few years until he discovered the charity Tourette’s Action.

As Shay spoke about his condition, his family confessed their son was scared to go out for fear of what others were thinking of his tics.

After hearing about the young boy’s condition, the camera cut back to Alex and co-host Chris Ramsey as it was clear she was moved by his story.

Wiping her tears away and trying not to ruin her makeup, she said: “Without Children in Need- sorry.”

Trying to compose herself, Chris tried to comfort his co-host as he replied: “It got you that one didn’t it?”

Agreeing, she replied: “It got me. Without Children in Need, Shay wouldn’t have met other children who share the same difficulties that he’s had to face.”

It was clear Alex was still overwhelmed by Shay’s story as her voice was trying not to break as she continued to speak.

As the audience let out a huge round of applause, the host informed viewers how they could donate to causes which help children like Shay.

Introducing the next segment of the show, Alex said: “It’s one of my favourite parts of the show right now.

“Young people from all corners of the UK unite to sing in the Children in Need choir, it’s a heartfelt rendition of You Raise Me Up. Chris replied: “You’re going to cry again!”

Hanging her head, she confessed to Chris and BBC viewers: “I know!”

At the beginning of the BBC special, Princess Kate kicked off the three-hour-long show with a message to viewers.

She said: “Tonight is all about helping to support, champion and empower all children to be the very, very best they can be. Which is crucial for their future health and happiness.”

Children in Need is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
