During the first of the two-night Showstoppers round, 48 contestants were whittled down to 24.
After Nutsa Buzaladze belted out a rendition of Proud Mary by Tina Turner, Katy told her: "We have really appreciated you being in this competition. And we did not put you in the top 24."
A devastated Nuspa welled up and whispered: "It's okay", as dramatic background music played.
She then gazed around for a few seconds before Katy told her: "You put yourself in that top 24. Nutsa, you put yourself in that top 24 with your incredible talent!"
Nutsa looked baffled and Katy appeared to be try and reassure her, saying: "We didn't put you in there, you did. As confusing as it seems you're going to the top 24!"
Zacaharia Smith endured a similar experience after his performance, when Katie told her: "You will be going home…. to pack your bags to come back to the top 24!'
Many viewers took a dim view on Katie's actions and rushed to Twitter to hit out at her tactic – claiming it was "cruel".
One raged: "Is it just me or does it bug anyone else that Katy Perry keeps trolling people about whether they made it to the top 24 or not?
"I feel it's cruel to make them think they aren't going through….. and then say, Yeah, you made it!"
Another fuming fan said: "Katy Perry tries way to hard. Like get to the point girl. There is no need for the extra drama #AmericanIdol."
A third claimed: "#AmericanIdol is getting ridiculous with trying to trick contestants to make them think they didn’t get into the top 24."
During the show, contestants performed with a live band for the first time in a bid to make it through to the next episode where singers will face an audience vote.
Before Nutsa took to the stage judges said she was on "rocky" ground because she had "slept through" practicing for the duets.
