BBC Breakfast star Naga Munchetty has worried fans that she could be leaving the morning show for good after she bade an emotional farewell to her co-star.

Naga has been a staple of the morning news programme since 2009, and usually presents the show alongside Charlie Stayt.

But the news came that political correspondent Adam Fleming will be taking a lengthy absence from the show to concentrate on other projects – leaving Naga heartbroken.

Adam announced on Twitter: "This is my last week at Westminster for a while because I’m going to do other stuff for a few months including #BBCNewscast. Thanks for all the constructive feedback of my political coverage on this platform."

He accompanied the announcement with a snap of himself clutching a BBC News umbrella outside Downing Street, surrounded by cameras and recording equipment.

And Naga was quick to respond to the news, emotionally penning: "A change is as good as a rest (they say). I don't like what they say….

"Still, I hope you enjoy the change. I'll miss you on @BBCBreakfast x."

Frantic fans, however, took this as a cryptic hint that Naga herself could be leaving the programme, and headed to the replies section to beg: "Oh no don’t say you are leaving Naga!"

While other fans rushed to support Adam, with BBC Breakfast stand-in host Rachel Burden writing: "We will miss you!" with a sad face emoji.

As BBC 5 Live host Rick Edwards agreed: "We will!"

Another fan echoed: "So glad you’re still going to do #bbcnewscast (not the fake one!) – essential listening every evening. The sensitivity with which you tackle difficult topics is fantastic. Good luck with the ‘other stuff’ too!"

"Oh no, I hate change! But I love Adam Fleming on Newscast, so I’m happy. Have fun with your new projects," someone else said.

A third said: "Your energy, insight and enthusiasm bring so much to the political arena – get back on the horse as soon as you can. We will miss you."

It comes after Naga said "onwards and upwards" after admitting her most recent workout session was "not easy".

Posting a sweaty gym snap to her Instagram account, Naga wrote: "That wasn't easy. At least it's done. Onwards and upwards x."

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
