Vera fans have had a long wait for new episodes of the ITV crime drama. But Brenda Blethyn shared some exciting news on her official Twitter account prompting speculation the much-loved series will return very soon.

Posting on Twitter on December 16, Brenda explained she was “emotional” as she wrapped scenes for the latest series.

She told her followers: “That’s a wrap on VERA 12.

“Many thanks to the wonderful Vera team cast and crew. Feel emotional.”

Fans were quick to comment with Chris O posting: “Love Vera and love you Brenda, your acting is always so real and touching. Enjoy a well earned rest, all the Best for Christmas.”

“A great series & we love you in the role. Classic. Hope this series keeps going. Keeps you on your toes,” TS tweeted.

“Congratulations on a successful series & to all who make it possible.”

Jackie Lad added: “Spotted you from the Shields Ferry in the fog last week. Hope our fog horn didn’t cause too much disruption to your filming!”

Walt hoped for news of a release date, writing: “I’ve been watching the re-runs on ITV3, the benefit, possibly the only one, of getting older is I don’t remember “who done it” 9 years after watching the first time.

“Great news on VERA 12, do you know the transmission date yet?”

Brenda wasn’t the only star celebrating the end of filming as DS Aiden Healy star Kenny Doughty shared a snap from the set.

Kenny and Brenda posed with a clapperboard alongside Riley Jones as they flashed a smile at the camera.

Kenny captioned the photo: “And that’s a wrap. S12 E5. We now have 7 episodes to show & I’m excited for you to see them.

“Of course I want to say thank you and congratulations on another series to my buddy Brenda.

“Absolute rock of a friend and astounding leading lady. Love you!

“But this show simply would not happen without the hardest working crew I know. On the floor every day.

“No matter the location. The weather. The tears. The laughter. They give Brenda & myself the stage in which to act. And without them we would be rudderless.”

Kenny went on to thank the cast and crew of the latest series before adding: “Merry Christmas. Keep safe. Lots of love Xxx.”

In other shots posted to his Instagram account, Kenny could be seen laughing with Brenda on set.

He praised the access as “talent personified” and “too bloody funny”.

Vera is expected to return in 2023.
