Casualty's first female paramedic Sandra Mute is unrecognisable 36 years later after becoming Doctor Who star

CASUALTY'S first female paramedic Sandra Mute has shocked fans by looking totally unrecognisable 36 years after hitting our screens.

Lisa Bowerman played the iconic character, who was tragically killed off from the soap in 1987 after two seasons on the popular drama.

Lisa, 60, rose to fame as the first female paramedic on the BBC show – whose character was seen being brutally stabbed and killed before her swift exit.

Paramedic Sandra had her fair share of drama throughout her 15 episodes, including starting an affair with her colleague Andrew Ponting.

She was killed off after trying to defend her lover as they faced danger trying to save a suicidal young girl, as the character was stabbed to death.

The actress went on to star in a number of Doctor Who spin-offs as companion Bernice Summerfield before turning her back on the silver screen.

In both roles, Lisa was known for her long dark tresses – which were often slicked back into a ponytail – and her stunning, youthful looks.

Now, the star – who works as a professional photographer and lives with her long-term partner and actor David Warner – looks quite different from her TV days.

Still sporting her dark-brown locks, Lisa keeps her hair short and often styles it in loose curls for her rare red carpet or theatre appearances.

Seen occasionally on stage, both acting and directing, the actress looks to have kept her timeless good looks according to her frequent Twitter photo updates.

Lisa isn't the only Casualty star to have shocked fans with their changing appearance since they were last seen on the medical drama.

David Hide actor Jason Durr had fans in a frenzy recently when he was seen looking unrecognisable in a throwback snap to his early acting days.

Jason, 54, looks considerably younger in the snap which appeared to be from his early 20s, as he donned a dapper suit for a photoshoot.

The star set a sultry stare towards the camera as he smouldered for the snap, wearing a white shirt, black trousers and polka-dot suspenders.

Jason's fans went wild over the snap, which the actor posted alongside a "throwback" hashtag on Tuesday afternoon.

"James Dean ain't got nothing on you," wrote one pal, as a second chimed in: "Jason, you are ageing like a fine wine and cheese."
