During Tuesday’s instalment of the BBC show, five stars took to the Celebrity MasterChef kitchen to try and impress judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace. However, when Jimmy Bullard decided to mix goat’s cheese and mussels, it did not go down too well.
After welcoming tonight’s other contestants, Clarke Peters, Kirsty Gallaher, Richard Blackwood and LesleyJoseph, it was time for them to get stuck into their first challenge.
Informing the Celebrity MasterChef contestants that they were taking part in “under the cloche”, judge John Torode revealed more about what they had to do.
Each star had a mystery ingredient under a silver dome they had to incorporate into a dish of their choosing.
Kirsty was given a lemon, Clarke had banana blossom, Lesley had fish, Richard had to use steak and Jimmy had fresh goat’s cheese.
Allowed to cook either a sweet or savoury dish using their given ingredient along with items in the larder, they got to cooking.
When Jimmy was speaking about his dish he admitted he had never cooked with fresh goat cheese before but had a vision in mind of what he wanted to do.
He said: “A creamy, cheesy sauce, mussels, nice and simple.”
However, after he revealed what he would be making, viewers quickly took to Twitter to slam the odd combination.
FlopsyPickle said: “The idea of mussels and goats cheese is enough to make me puke up the nuts I just ate. Those are two things that don’t go together! Grim.”
Bury Sue commented: “Cheesy sauce with mussels???? #
Jo Moriatry added: “I like mussels, white wine, mushrooms and goats cheese separately but can’t imagine they would taste nice together #celebritymasterchef”
Kath Wilson said: “Jimmy Bullard’s ‘Mussels in a Goats Cheese and Mushroom sauce’ ?? Really?..umm, nope I’ll pass on that one thanks..sorry Jim!!”
Ariadne demanded: “Someone please take the goat’s cheese and mussels away from Jimmy Bullard IMMEDIATELY. “
When Jimmy was explaining his dish to Gregg he admitted he has never cooked mussels before and was winging it.
Once John found out what Jimmy was making he said: “Mussels, cream and white wine I get.
“But he’s adding the goat’s cheese to it as well, with some mushrooms. Mussels and goat’s cheese?”
John said he was unsure how the two will go together but gave it a try when it come to critiquing the final product.
After trying the dish, he told Jimmy: “It’s an interesting one.”
While Gregg said: “Those mussels are cooked perfectly, but it’s that salty creaminess of the goat’s cheese that just doesn’t match that white wine sharp sweetness.
“I would let you cook me a bowl of mussels anytime you like, I’ll just make sure you’re nowhere near my cheese board!”
Despite his odd combination for his first dish, Jimmy made it through to the next stage of the competition as it was Clarke who was eliminated.
Celebrity MasterChef airs on BBC One at 9pm.
