Maria Connor (played by Samia Longchambon) has had her fair share of heartbreak and tragedy over the years – especially after her husband, Liam Connor (Rob James-Collier) passed away. The hairdresser has been taking a backseat on Coronation Street of late after her new husband Gary Windass (Mikey North) was sent to prison over the disappearance of loan shark Rick Neelan (Greg Wood). Since Gary’s prison sentence, Maria has been concentrating on her son Liam, who she named after her late husband. However, in upcoming scenes of the ITV soap, the businesswoman is set for more heartbreak after her son is diagnosed with asthma.
Maria, who has been unlucky in love, married Liam Connor in 2008. The couple faced tragedy with their first son Paul, who was stillborn.
However, in 2009, Maria gave birth to a healthy baby boy, who she named after his father after he was tragically murdered in a hit-and-run.
The hairdresser went on to meet Gary Windass in 2020 and despite him going to prison over Rick’s disappearance, Maria chose to forgive him for his crimes.
In upcoming scenes, Gary is set to return to the cobbles from Bristol, only to be told by Maria that Imran Habeeb (Charlie de Melo) can’t afford the experts needed to clear his foster daughter, Kelly Neelan’s (Millie Gibson) name.
Kelly is currently in prison on remand for the murder of Seb Franklin (Harry Visinoni) and attack on his girlfriend Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) after thug Corey Brent (Maximus Evans) framed her for the crime.
Maria is taken aback when her husband says he wants to give Imran the cash anonymously.
However, the hairdresser gives Gary a stark warning as she tells him she will walk away from their marriage if he puts Kelly before her and Liam.
Later on, Maria’s son Liam and Jack Webster (Kyran Bowes) are playing football in the street when Liam starts gasping for air, unable to breathe.
The ambulance arrives for Liam but is unable to turn onto the street due to double-parked cars.
Maria is sent into a panic as she watches her son fight for breath.
Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) is forced to move his car to let the ambulance through as a paramedic gives Liam oxygen.
At the hospital, Liam and Maria are told by doctors that he has asthma.
To make things worse, Maria is shocked to learn from the doctor that air pollution caused by traffic fumes is a common cause of the illness.
Liam is also devastated to learn that he will need to use an inhaler for the foreseeable future.
The diagnosis also leaves Maria in a state of panic, and she is hellbent on taking action.

Deciding that Underworld’s van is responsible for her son’s diagnosis, Maria insists Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) take it off the road.
However, much to Maria’s shock, Sarah refuses to do anything about it and the pair end up clashing.
Sarah is annoyed by her accusations and tells Maria to stick to hairdressing.
Maria then decides to take things one step further by telling Gary she is selling their car and insists he gets rid of his work van too.
Meanwhile, Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor) is pleased when Maria backs her campaign about the parking issue.
Speaking about her latest storyline, actress Samia told the Daily Mirror: “Liam has had a chesty cough, he’s playing football on the street then suddenly he collapses struggling to breathe. He’s taken to hospital, and it turns out he’s had an asthma attack.
“The ambulance can’t get down the street because of all the cars, which makes it even scarier. At the hospital, the doctor says his asthma could have been caused by pollution and Maria just sees red.
“She’s fuming and it becomes her mission to get rid of the vehicles causing the heavy pollution on the street.”
The ITV soap has worked with charity, Asthma UK on Maria’s storyline after it was revealed air toxicity is linked to 36,000 deaths a year.
Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, who died aged nine in 2013, is cited as an inspiration for the storyline.
It is unclear how Maria’s storyline will play out, although will she turn to getting revenge on Sarah after she refuses to do anything about the Underworld van?
Coronation Street airs on Wednesday at 7.30pm on ITV.
