Coronation Street: When is Stephen leaving?

Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) has rocked Coronation Street since his return last year with two murders and a sinister plan to target Carla Barlow (Alison King).

But how much longer can we expect him to stick around?

In the short time he has been back, he has already taken the lives of Teddy and Leo Thompkins.

First came Leo, who’s death was accidental, following a tussle on the factory gantry. He took a deadly fall when Stephen pushed him, during an argument about Stephen’s money troubles.

Next was Teddy, Leo’s dad, who had his suspicions over Stephen’s involvement in his son’s sudden disappearance. With Teddy onto him, Stephen had no choice but to finish him off, to stop his deadly secret getting out.

Now, he is targeting factory boss Carla, with the aim of taking control of Underworld himself.

How much further can he go?

When is Stephen leaving Coronation Street?

It has been revealed that Stephen’s story will stretch much further into 2023, so we can expect to see him on screen for a while yet.

In December, show producer Iain MacLeod revealed that they had plans for Stephen that would stretch over the next year.

‘His fatal flaw of arrogance and egotism, as well as his need to be top dog, drives him into increasingly desperate acts over the next 12 months.’ Iain said, adding that there was ‘lots to come!’

Actor Todd Boyce also confirmed this, saying in December 2022 that, ‘Iain was talking about [the story ending] maybe the end of next year.’

So, it is as yet unclear exactly when Stephen will depart the cobbles, but it won’t be any time soon.

One thing we do know is that he will surely have to face up to his heinous crimes eventually.

During an appearance on Loose Women on February 15, Iain was asked if Stephen is going to get his comeuppance.

‘Of course he is, it’s a soap!’, he replied. ‘Bad guys always get their comeuppance in the end, don’t they? So, yes, 100%.’

However, this may be some way off, as Iain also hinted that, ‘there’s a lot of fun to be had between now and then.’

It’s good news for Stephen fans, as it appears that the supervillain will be on our screens for some time.
