Coronation Street’s Claire Sweeney ‘very grateful’ as she reacts to fans after cobbles debut

Claire Sweeney has admitted she is "very grateful" after making her debut on Coronation Street as Cassandra "Cassie" Plummer.

The actress, 52, made her first appearance last week as Tyrone Dobbs' long-lost mum and Evelyn Plummer's estranged daughter Cassie.

Taking to Twitter on Sunday, Claire wrote: "Had so many lovely comments about my first scene in @itvcorrie with the amazing Dame Maureen Lipman. Written by @Iankershaw and directed by Abe Dukes. Thanks for all your kind words, feel very grateful."

Soap fans were quick to react to the tweet as one person said: "The best two-hander in serial drama for many a year – Maureen Lipman superb as ever with @clairesweeney knocking it right back at her. A masterclass in timing, delivery and believability – in other words- acting at its finest."

A different account put: "So happy you've arrived, Loved watching you this week, introducing Cassie was a great next step for Evelin & Tyron. You was incredible on Wednesday night, Cannot wait to see more of you soon & see how the story develops. X @clairesweeney."

Another follower wrote: "Congrats on a great first two episodes claire, you and maureen are AMAZING together i can't wait to see more of cassie. i love her already."

While a different fan added: "You're already making me proud and what a great addition to the show as always too" with a heart emoji.

Last week, fans will recall that Evelyn was left both devastated and furious after Cassie was rushed to hospital following a heroin overdose.

And things went from bad to worse when Cassie and Tyrone came face-to-face on Friday in nail-biting scenes. However, Tyrone had no clue that the woman he was speaking to was in fact his long-lost mother.

After discovering Cassie had discharged herself from hospital, Evelyn returned home to see Tyrone and Cassie chatting – but Cassie didn't reveal her identity to Tyrone and instead went by the name of "Cath".

Evelyn entered the living room and was horrified to see Cassie grinning at her from the sofa. When Tyrone enquired how they know each other, Evelyn was thrown into a panic.

At the end of Friday's episode, after failing to secure £5000 to put her daughter into rehab, Evelyn met with Cassie, pretending Tyrone would be there too.

Evelyn explained that in order for her to build a relationship with her son and grandchildren she would need to get clean.

She then explained that they would be going to stay in a friend's empty flat where Evelyn could help Cassie get clean as they drove off in a taxi.

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and ITVX.
