Phil Mitchell's fate appears to have been confirmed during Tuesday night's episode of EastEnders after the gangster got into a scuffle with another hardman in prison.

The character is serving time after it became clear that he played some part in the murder and disappearance of Vincent Hubbard.

During a prison meeting with ex-wife Sharon Watts, he hands her a series of letters before telling her to make sure his family receive them as he "won't see tomorrow".

He went on to add: "If I turn to an informant, it's not just my life at risk, Kat crossing the Square, the kids in the playground, Louise around a pool in Portugal, Ben, Ben on a night out, they will all become targets, I haven't got a choice," reflecting on the deal Keeble wanted him to take.

"You are the rock your family needs, the rock I need," pleaded Sharon as she begged him to take the deal offered by the police.

Phil said: "It's over Sharon, I've had a good life, I've had a good inning, I don't want anyone to know until after, alright, make sure you give them, them letters alright?

"Do mum proud on the bar launch, yeah?"

"Make sure they get them, yeah? You're the only one I can trust. I ain't going to see tomorrow

She exclaimed: "This can't be it, tell the guards.

"I love you, I always have I always will, Phil, fight," before being dragged out by prison guards.

Earlier in the week, Phil had been offered a lifeline by DI Keeble, who handed him a burner phone knowing that he was in grave danger.

The copper had told Phil to press '3' on his burner phone at any time, meaning that police would instantly be at the door of his cell to protect him from any thugs.

Sharon later called Grant in floods of tears, demanding he phoned her back while a later clip showed Phil on his knees, as he spoke to a picture of his late mum, Peggy, asking her to be "waiting for him".

As the episode drew to a close Craig Erskine and his pals were seen entering Phil's cell before what appeared to be a fight broke out.

EastEnders returns to BBC One on Thursday, July 7 at 7pm with the episode also available to stream on iPlayer now.
