The couple decided to transform their lives in the UK by purchasing a 45-room chateau in the Pays de la Loire region of northwest France. Channel 4 began documenting their incredible journey on Escape to the Chateau, which began airing episodes in 2016. Years on and with the family home and business going strong, it’s easy to forget the work that went into making the chateau what it is today. An early episode exposed the true amount spent by the husband and wife during the first year – a colossal £380,000.
Episode three of the first series saw Dick and Angel continue to struggle with renovation work and finances as they prepared for their chateau wedding.
The coupe worked solidly from the depths of winter and into late autumn, by which point they’d spent almost £400,000.
On top of the £280,000 it cost them to purchase the castle, they also spent the best part of £100,000 on renovations and the wedding.
But episode three was a cause for celebration as, after extensive work day in, day out, Dick and Angel could enjoy what they had accomplished.
The newlyweds were able to reflect on what they had done in a year.
“I’m really happy,” Angel, 43, told her husband Dick as they discussed the transformation of the chateau.
“This room, since we came in here – heating, power, lighting, windows, it’s clean, it’s painted,” 62-year-old Dick added.
“I don’t understand the paint,” he added. “But that’s your department,” he told Angel.
“And that bathroom’s a nice bathroom now, isn’t it?”
Entering the ‘hole in the wall’ room, Angel commented: “I think it’s a lovely, lovely room.”
“I had to make all the pictures in exact lines for you,” the former army colonel explained.
“There’s nothing you haven’t moaned about though,” Angel laughed, adding: “Because that’s what you like to do, just a grumpy man.”
“The one place that looks big to me is out here,” Dick remarked, talking about the entranceway.
He continued: “And who’d have thought we’d have two unicorns?”
Referring to matching unicorn heads of the walls, Angel laughed and replied: “Me. I’d have thought that.
“Do you know what, I love the pineapple chandelier, I love it. I absolutely love it.”
“I’m really looking forward to living here with you,” Angel stated.
“We made it happen, I love you.” Five years on from their magical first moment of seeing the chateau all fixed up, the husband and wife team have built up a strong fanbase.
Viewers continue to enjoy watching the duo as they run their business and share DIY tips in their spin-off show, Make Do and Mend.
All episodes of Escape to the Chateau are available to watch on All4.
