Goodnight Sweetheart's Reg Deadman actor Christopher Ettridge unrecognisable as show nears 30th birthday

As Goodnight Sweetheart's dim-witted Reg, Christopher Ettridge was one of the sitcom's biggest stars.

And while he looks very different to the character that made him a comedy favourite, he is still a performer at the age of 74.

Christopher did six years on the classic Nicholas Lyndhurst sitcom as police officer Reg between 1993 and 1999 – plus 2016's brief revival.

He dominated the 1940s section of the show when bed-hopping time-traveller Gary Sparrow went back to the Blitz in London.

But he also had a recurring role in EastEnders as baddie Graeme, one of Steve Owen's accomplices and appeared in Mr Selfridge as Mr King.

He also had roles in The Bill, Harry Enfield and Chums, Julius Caesar and Hitler: The Rise of Evil and played the postman in 2000 film Kevin and Perry Go Large.

The star, who has three children and lives in Sussex with his wife Angela, also had a glittering stage career.

He played the headmaster in The History Boys and starred alongside Tom Conti in the West End production of Twelve Angry Men.

In 2000 he took up directing too, but said he fondly remembers playing Reg in the BBC sitcom – which turns 30 next year.

Quoted in the Express he said: "Although the character of Reg was none too bright, he was a lovely, sweet man who had a heart as big as a house.

"He could often be found drinking in The Royal Oak pub and was always protective of Gary and Phoebe.

"Being in such a popular series meant I got taken more seriously and that led to roles I would not normally get offered."
