I’m A Celeb’s Ant and Dec admit Australia is show’s ‘spiritual home’ ahead of return Down Under

Ant and Dec have had their say on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here returning to Australia this year, saying the country is the programme's "spiritual home".

The ITV reality show has taken place at Gwrych Castle in Wales for the past two years due to the Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Now, the iconic co-hosts have confirmed that the show is returning “home” and will swap out South Wales, UK for New South Wales, Australia.

The Saturday Night Takeaway discussed the news on Heart Radio, telling Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston: "The plan is we're going back to Australia. It's got to go back to hits spiritual home. Everyone wants to see a bit of sunshine at that time of year on the telly."

The 46 year olds had previously shared their “hopes” that the show would return to Australia as they were desperate to avoid the cold, challenging weather in Wales.

Appearing on The One Show, Ant and Dec admitted they had nothing “against Wales” but they were desperate to return down under.

Alex Jones asked the duo: “Australia are reopening their borders from Monday. So is it the castle or is it the jungle?”

Ant replied: “Well, the plan is the jungle.”

Dec jumped in and added: “Nothing against Wales.”

“We love Wales, but Australia is home and we'd like to get back there if we can,” Ant continued. “With Covid there was no getting around it.”

The Covid-19 travel restrictions forced the ITV show to relocate to the UK for two years throughout the pandemic and see celebrities camp out in a restored castle.

Filming in the Welsh castle proved difficult, especially as Storm Arwen forced the show to pull off air for three nights in 2021.

The storm “wrecked” the ITV set and for the first time the show had to air a pre-recorded episode, before the contestants were evacuated to a hotel half way through the series.

A source told The Sun: “The castle was a worthy venue for a year, but the viewers clearly want Australia or nothing.

“The novelty of a new location was exciting last year, but in 2022 it just has to be Oz again.”

ITV’s Rosemary Newell, Director of Content previously stated: "We expect a I'm A Celebrity to return in Australia in November, when it will generate audience over 11 million."

I’m A Celebrity will return in the autumn.
