Kate Garraway: Derek has told me he loves me

Kate Garraway opened up to Iain Dale on LBC about the heartbreaking moments she feared her husband Derek Draper would be “snatched away” from her. The Good Morning Britain host was discussing her new book The Power of Hope on the radio show as she bravely about her husband’s condition and his continuing treatment.

“Every phone call they prepared you that he might die,” Kate said.

“They’d say, ‘You have to realise that he might not make this,’ the phrase they eat saying was ‘He’s hanging by a thread.’

“It’s kind of impossible really because what are you meant to do with that information? How do you prepare yourself?

“I think what I tried to do was try to manage the fear. That is what we’ve all had to do through this pandemic.”

Speaking of the hope that the pandemic is coming to an end, she continued: “We are hopefully, hopefully starting to emerge and think we’re all changed and we’ve all had to learn to live with something fearful and move forward with living with something fearful.

“I say to friends, I now feel like at any minute the world could be snatched from me but really that could happen any day to any of us.

“Managing the fear of it going forward is hopefully one of the things we can take with us to make our lives richer.”

Kate continued: “In the run up to Christmas, things had been looking more and more positive I think as a country and for Derek as well.

“His communication seemed to be improving and he seemed to rousing and just as we went into the lockdown we’re now emerging from he seemed to shut down in a strange way.

“All the way through this there’s been lots of ‘I don’t knows’ because there is no data on somebody that’s suffered Covid this way.”
