Game of Thrones star Kit Harington has voiced his support for the upcoming prequel House of the Dragon. But he admits that watching the new series will be “painful.” However, his co-star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has a different take.

The actor — who played Jaime Lannister on the original series in Westeros — says that he “can’t wait” to see the next installment in the Game of Thrones universe.

‘Game of Thrones’ prequel ‘House of the Dragon’ takes place nearly two centuries before the original series

House of the Dragon will be the first HBO Max series to expand the Game of Thrones universe. The story is based on George R. R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, and it’s focused on a brutal Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. The bloody event tore the family — and Westeros — apart.

Doctor Who alum Matt Smith leads a large ensemble cast as dragon-rider Daemon Targaryen. The prequel will also feature 17 dragons, which excites Martin.

“Hopefully, they’ll each have their own personalities, they’ll be instantly recognizable when you see them, the colors and all of that, because the dragons do have personalities in the books, and it’ll be great to see that come alive. And the dragon riders. That’s all pretty cool,” the author and House of the Dragon producer told the The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of podcast.

Kit Harington says watching ‘House of the Dragon’ will be ‘painful’

This past summer, Harington told the Associated Press that he supports the upcoming prequel. But he also confessed that it ‘might be painful’ to watch House of the Dragon when it premieres next year. The Game of Thrones star later explained to Insider that he made that comment because “there’s emotion connected to that for me.”

“I think to see people get into outfits and costumes, that resemble what we wore for all those years, and it [has] the same music and style and tone, but not be in it is always going to feel — There’s going to be a rawness there,” Harington explained.

‘Game of Thrones’ star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau feels quite differently than Kit Harington

Coster-Waldau had a bit of a different perspective on House of the Dragon. He recently told the producers at Good Morning America that being a prequel to such a popular series is “a two-edged sword.”

He says the connection to Game of Thrones will get the new series a lot of attention, which is a “good thing.” But, he says the trick is that nobody knows these new characters. Coster-Waldau hopes that people will “stick around” and give House of the Dragon a chance.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ‘can’t wait’ to see ‘House of the Dragon’

The actor went on to praise the House of the Dragon trailer that HBO Max dropped earlier this year. He applauded the way the prequel looked, and couldn’t get enough of one notable Targaryen feature on Smith.

“But I thought it looked incredible,” Coster-Waldau said. “Matt Smith just rocks that white wig so well. I was just waiting for Emilia Clarke to show up, it’s the world of the Targaryens. I can’t wait to watch that show, for sure.”

Season 1 of the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel is currently in production

Production for season 1 of House of the Dragon began earlier this year at Leavesden Studios in the UK. Throughout the year, fans have also spotted the cast and crew filming on location in places like the Portuguese city of stone known as Monsanto and the Spanish castle of Trujillo.

Filming should be wrapping soon, as the series is expected to premiere in the spring of 2022. All eight seasons of Game of Thrones are available on HBO Max.
